Personally, I thought that The Wrestler and Gran Torino were both on par with WWTBAM ( ) but it seems like the latter is getting sooo much press.
The thing is, they're all solid movies... with a couple of weak performances scattered throughout.
For me though, I just think this was a relatively weak year for movies, and perhaps that's why there isso much hype around this one. |
What is WWTBAM?
Also, what was the best movie (in your opinion)
of 2007
2006
2005
I didn't watch many movies those years so there was probably something worth watching which I missed.
Oh I also watched Milk. The ending was cool (even though it's a biopic and I could have spoiled it by reading wikipedia first), but all in all it was a little gay for my tastes. Slumdog Millionaire was 100x better than Milk. |

my money's on Benjamin Button for best pic. It's not really the best I've seen, but it's got:
-literary pedigree(based on F.Scott Fitzgerald's short story)
- length( the Academy love their epics)
- gorgeous cinematography
- accents ( even if they did remind me of Forrest Gump)
- starpower.
Hollywood really needs a mainstream, studio pic to win to prove it is still relevant to "intelligent"movie going adults |

On the other hand, do the public give a **** what the Oscars bring? I think they don't. People will watch what they think might be good or what their friends told them is good. There is indeed an Oscar effect, but it's only people watching movies that Hollywood told them is good. The quality of the movie doesn't matter. Oscar fans will watch whatever they give the award to. If a bad movie wins an Oscar the people who follow that shit will watch it. Normal people dont care.
If anything but Slumdog wins best picture I'll be both surprised and disappointed. |

Be
A
Millionaire
Ok, my top pics from the past few years (keeping in mind that everyone has an opinion on something...)
2008
-The Dark Knight
-The Wrestler
-Let the right one in (horror)
2007
-300
-Superbad
-No Country For Old Men
-The Kite Runner (but that may be because I enjoyed the book so much)
2006
-Letters From Iwo Jima
-The Constant Gardener
2005
-Walk the Line
2004
-Hotel Rwanda
-Finding Neverland
-Ray
But to each his own.
The thing is, I'm not saying that Slumdog isn't a good movie.. I like it a lot. I especially liked the for 1/3 of it with the young kids. I didn't think that the later incarnation of Jamal's older brother/buddy was very good though. |

Recently I liked...
Slumdog Millionaire
The Wrestler
Happy-Go-Lucky
I thought Benjamin Button was 40 minutes too long

| The only movie I saw that came out in 2008 was Pineapple Express. It was a decent stoner flick. |

| 2008 really has not had as many movies really leap out and grab me. Dark Knight was probably the only exception and it is really sad that is not getting the award treatment it deserves. I agree that the Button movie is going to get Oscar though. It has the pedigree that screams it even if it is a bit of an overrated movie, not terrible though. |

| Is Slumdog Millionaire a film worth watching in the cinema or a download / rental? |

I thought Dark Knight was a let down after the hype.
Slumdog was good, much better than I expected.
I liked Burn After Reading and Seven Pounds, is that next years films?
I think Gran Torino really exceded my expectations. |
