| I am in the process of getting my Russian VISA right now. Aside from it just being a plain pain in the ass, there are no problems getting one in Korea. |

So the obvious question, do you have more or less than 6 months remaining on your ARC which would dispute Sean02's version of the event? (I am genuinely interested).

You are go to Russia again ... you went 2 years ago yes? I guess the Mongols are more lax with the visa bureaucrazy. |

My E-2 expires at the end of February, but they never even asked about that or even asked me if I had an ARC or if I was a resident of Korea. |

You're saying you've been to the Russian embassy, down the road from the Kyobo building in Seoul, and they've accepted your application? They didn't ask for your alien card?
I was specifically told on the phone before I went I needed this, and told by at least three officials at different times there about its validity, one of them also making a phone call to whoever else. The card by Russian law had to have validy extending beyond the prospective Russian visa expiry date.
Are you Korean, or of a nationality with different rules applying? Perhaps you could post again if you actually get your visa issued when you go to collect it.
If you're in the same position as me I can't explain why you're treated differently, unless procedure or law has simply changed. The place was absolutely clear and no-nonesense with me on this thing... |

I have been to the Russian embassy (not down the road from the Kyobo building) and I will have my VISA in a week. I'm Canadian so it takes 15 days and 60,000 won. My buddy, who's American, already has his and went through the same process. For him, it took 10 days and 70,000 won. Did you have a proper invitation? I am only going for 5 days and will be back before my ARC expires, but they would not know this as they have never seen it or even asked to see it. The only thing they have looked at is my passport. |

Hi ajgeddes, thanks for that.
I wonder if the short length of your required visa explains things...?
The embassy is near City Hall metro station, exit 2 if I remember (up from the Kyobo bookstore)...?
One thing I wonder is if the requirement to 'Get the visa in your home country' really means 'Only the embassy in your country can issue your visa', meaning that postal applications might be possible?
(Assuming I was treated differently from you for good reasons.)
By the way, yes of course I had an invitation, $28 with the length of stay specified, 30 days.
And, I wonder if the clerk just looked at your Korean work visa in your passport and that was sufficient to see you have 90 days after your return. I didn't have this so they checked my card...?
EDIT: Sorry, you said your visa runs out end of Feb...

The one thing is that I also don't have a VISA in my passport, only a stamp, which has no date on it. Even if that were the case, my VISA expires only 3 days after I get back. I honestly don't know what the problem is but I will see if I can find out any more information. Perhaps it is because I am only staying in one place for the entire trip??? Whatever it is, my home embassy is not involved, only the one here in Korea. They have never even asked my VISA status in Korea and have no access to the expiration dates.
The only thing I can think of is when you filled out the application form, did you put down a Korean home address? |

Yes I think I put down a Korean home address.
It doesn't make too much sense to me either. Maybe they just don't like moneyed onward travellers waltzing into their country then onto somewhere else: they did give me the impression they still thought they were in the Cold War and I could be a CIA spy.
You are applying for a tourist visa I suppose? |

In 2007 I went to a travel agent in Busan (Kansang??) and they did everything for me. Got me the Russian visa with invite and my Chinese visa. I had about 3 weeks left on my ARC. I am a US passport holder.
After that I hopped on a boat to Dalian, then a train to Beijing. You buy the Trans-Sib tickets at a hotel near one of the train stations. Try to buy it a week or so in advance.
Before you get to China try to get some rubles (which are not easy to find). I had a hell of a time and didn't get any until the last day of the trip. Also, if you are planning on drinking, best bet is to buy beer from the Chinese meal car, or at the Mongolian/Russian boarder where there is a nice shop. They sell PBR there. It will get MUCH more expensive when the Russian meal car is attached. Also, since you may not have rubles, it will be hard to buy things.
This hostel is right across the street from where the train departs, and it's a five minute walk to the other hotel that sells the train tickets.
