Wasn't trying to be that osang...just clearing something up..
The times you were "screwed over" did you at least once give notice and quit or did you run everythime?
I am just curious the chances that one person being "screwed over" so many times are quite remote and sometimes people run because they just don't like their jobs... |

| aside from the daily craziness of smashing windows and spitting on us, he never paid on time, made us work over time, and pimped us out to peoples apartments! |

Pimped you?
Ya gotta love these expressions that try and convey bad experiences..
You should have used "enslaved us"...or "sold us into hard labor"...that would have been more evocative... |

Would "risked getting my ass bounced out of Korea so he could make some extra cash by making me teach illegally in other people's apartments" be a fairer assessment of her situation?
That boss deserved what he got, I can't imagine why you're defending him. |

Son deuro..
Where exactly did I defend her drunk boss???
I did not. I was just having a bit of fun with the expressions used.
From what she said, her boss did sound like a nightmare. |

Since you appear to have poor English skills which leads me to believe you are not a native speaker, If I were you I would count my lucky stars for having an English teaching job at all.
|
This sounded a bit odd so I went back and read the op again twice. I found only two mistakes, one that could clearly be seen as a typo because she wrote exactly the same thing a bit later and it was correct. She's a native speaker. |

Fair enough, it sounded at first like you were making light of her situation. |

I'm trying to give you the benefit of the doubt here Homer. My personal experiences and those of many of my friends have been bad enough that Osangrl's experiences are believable enough for me.
You've been here a while, I'd be surprised to hear that they aren't for you as well. |

| Most certainly as stated by another poster, fire off the question to your boss regarding the dual work locations. You can work at more than one location, but it must be clearly stated on your visa. The pay situation is not a healthy one to let continue. If he is unwilling to assist, then gauge his mood, if you think resigning would be benificial then do so, but if that could cause you any great amount of grief, then take your pay and bid him a fond farewell. |

I had a similar situation which lasted (because I'm a sucker for punishment) 7 long months.
My boss kept paying me late, deducting mysterious amounts from my wages, and I really had no recourse for many reasons.
My girlfriend at the time insisted I stick it out and wait. That is what a Korean would do damnit so you should too. And I did, mostly out of blind (read: pitch black Stevie Wonder blindess) love for my girlfriend.
The straw that broke the camel's back was demanding I saw my phone bill, which was 120,000 won more than it should have been.
He had been taking my money for my phone bill, not paying the bill on time, then getting a new bill which included the previous month's bill tacked on.
So I was ending up paying TWICE every month for my phone bill.
I called him on it, and things were never the same after that.
I gave my boss an ultimatum: pay my full amount, INCLUDING all back wages, or don't expect me come Monday.
Monday came, and I was over the Pacific Ocean sipping on Mott's Clamato and looking at the ocean through my little window.
Take my advice: Run forrest, run! |

GWOW - I'm very sorry to hear about your situation.
I have gotten similar advice from my (Korean) girlfriend when I've had problems with my bosses here.
"When in Rome, do as the Romans do" only goes so far. Since we do not have the same protection and support network that Koreans due here (i.e. we can't just quit, and we can't always trust the law to take our side) we cannot afford to always act like Koreans do.
It sounds like your work situation (at least in part) came between you and your girlfriend. I'm sorry to hear that things ended as badly as they did for you. I've had similar problems, aggravated by the fact that the Korean teacher at my school is my girlfriend's sister. Lucky for me, I've been able to convince my girlfriend to let me handle things my own way, while I do listen to her advice. But I think it really is just luck.
Good luck to you GWOW, I'm sorry to hear about your situation. |
