If I was in your position I might go to Russia via the former Soviet states (they have always fascinated me) and then maybe check out the Baltic states before heading down to Turkey and the Middle-East, then back to Korea. Either that or do the transsiberian from either Mongolia or Vladivostock and then head back from Moscow via the previously mentioned places.

I like the cargo ship idea too.

I think the reality of that would be pretty maddening however.

I've taken some long ferries from Korea to China...and around the Philippines. They are kind of okay for a day or two, but several months being able to literally see or do nothing whatsoever...

I personally think the idea sounds interesting, because years ago, that is just what people had to do to see something really cool. But the reality...it would like delaying a trip by a couple months and confining yourself to a very limited area with absolutely NOTHING to see and do while in the situation, and no way to expediate the process if you did want it expediated.

Some advice: don't spend your entire time in poor countries.

I realize there are some fascinating things to see in the developing world, however, it can get draining after a while.

If he visits developed countries, he'll blow the $10,000 USD REAL quick.

Face it, he's going to have to slum it in 3rd world countries to get by with the money he's got.

I don't think 5 months is enough time to do South America properly... Six months for South East Asia is hard, and S.America is just too big!! Anyway I am jealous, your a lucky one!

If I ever had 5 months off, I would look into freighter travel --- going by cargo ships. (Do a google search, various companies organize them).

I think it would be nice to just sit and relax for a month on a ship --- they cover huge distances and prices don't seem too bad.

I am doing the Busan to Long Beach trip in March. There are brief stops in Japan, but I cannot get off the ship. I am just doing it to see how it is. Costs about 100 a day, but that includes food.

I will try to do a brief write up here if I remember.

Did the Trans-Siberian last year. It was a great time and I met some great people. Did it alone and was in a second class cabin. Russian girl in the bed next to me was having sex with a Mongolian man while the Polish next door were drunkenly singing anti-communist songs.

The final choice was SEA - wow that was stressful to choose haha
anyways, it looks like i'll be on a island for a bit, looking for a yoga school for maybe 3 weeks, then muay thai school for 3 weeks, then travelling around Cambodia, Vietnam, visit some friends in northern Thailand, travel around Malaysia (thanks for the advice) volunteer in Indonesia, then make my way down to Perth
Then maybe come back to korea depending on the Won or Ive got an offer in Japan too Smile

Thanks for all your help guys! If anyone is around SEA for the next few months we can meet up for a beer Smile

Europe's not too expensive if you do it right... I lived in Europe for a year and visited around 10 countries. My favorite was a little hostel-type place, Anny Studios in Perissa Beach on Santorini Island in Greece. It was something like 11 or 14 Euros a night, they have apartments with kitchens and whatnot, two pools, a small poolside bar, and it's steps from the beach, you could see the black sand beaches from the poolside. I splurged on a 20E tour package and hiked a volcano, swam the hotsprings, and watched the sunset over Oia.
