Maybe the Dutch, Canadians, Swiss, California and the other States that have decriminalized cannabis...are the smart ones.

I don't believe the Dutch ever decriminalized it. In Amsterdam it is tolerated but I thought it was still illegal. And they are finding that all the problems associated with the liberalization of enforcement outweigh the tourist dollars so I think there will be fewer and fewer cafes there. Not 100% sure about this but that was my impression.

I know it is still a criminal offence in Canada not sure what youve heard. Quite sure it is also criminal in California and Switzerland.

I already pay enough taxes to provide healthcare for tobacco smokers; Id prefer not to have to pay for potheads as well.

You are obviously not a rational thinker. It is true that tax money goes to HealthCare for people who use tobacco. However, in Canada the tobacco industry generates between 8 and 9 billion dollars a year in tax revenue for government.

Maybe we should make tobacco illegal, that way the billions of dollars would go directly to organized crime. Your tax dollars are however going towards law enforcement of drug laws, costs to push these people through the courts etc.

In Canada about 500 million dollars is budgeted for the enforcement of drug laws. Not to mention the fact that all revenue generated by the sale of marijuana and other drugs is non-taxable. The BC marijuana industry alone is worth over 7 billion a year. Imagine the tax revenue.

You would pay less tax if marijuana was legal. In the 30's the end of the prohibition of alcohol helped America out of the Depression. If we ended the prohibition of marijuana, it would be a great first step to getting us out of this economic shitstorm.

What about Alaska? Alaska's a state too you know?!

Haven't been there in a long time but I do recall when I was a kid there in the 80's it was legal, you just couldn't sell it.

Talk about attracting losers: pay 1,000 dollars or so for each member of family per year (dividend fund), legalize pot, provide an attractive welfare system, and what do you get?

Every hill-billy, red-neck, trailer-trash, beat-up-pick-up-driving, hick west of the Mississippi.

I do miss Chilcoot Charlies though. Is that place still there? Near West High? Go Eagles!

Thanks NoExplode. You should read some of the links you found on google. The sites that are not pro-pot have some good info.

Cannabis remains a controlled substance in the Netherlands and both possession and production for personal use are still misdemeanors, punishable by fine. Coffee shops are also technically illegal according to the statutes but, as has been said, are flourishing nonetheless..

I was wrong about Holland. And you were wrong about Canada, California, and the Swiss.

Herb is also nowhere near as bad for your health as these 2 so, actually, it would save health care money if more people switched.

Wrong. Common misconception but not true at all.
Cigarettes come with filters that reduce tar in lungs. THC is in the tar so cannot be filtered out.

For the record - Pot is pretty seriously decriminalized

What does this mean?!
"Virtually no side effects!" "Almost no hidden fees." "Feels like the real thing."

Does it snow in your dream world?

I think this is what santafly was trying to say. Some states don't treat it as a serious drug. However, the Feds do, and Federal law in the US preempts state laws.

Alaska has toughened up their law a bit since you visited, but I am not knowledgeable on the limit and fine amounts. The Permanent Fund Dividend payout was closer to $2000 last year (maybe even above it) or so says my son, who receives said payout. And Alaska DOES get hicks from east of the Mississippi too. Just correcting the facts a bit.

Poor anti-pot crowd. We have the greatest athlete in the history of humanity, and the coolest world leader possible--both pro-ganja. That's gotta be a pretty big kick in the nuts to the hand-wringing, anti-herb crowd.

Is there any talk of the IOC doing anything about his medals?

I was talking about this yesterday, and several Korean coworkers thought that he should be stripped, and that Park Tae-Hwan should get more gold medals because he is not a "drug addict". Rolling Eyes

apparently, he's been suspended from competition for 3 months... such BS...

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7873669.stm

Quote:
The US swimmer Michael Phelps has been suspended from competition for three months after photographs were published appearing to show him smoking cannabis.

USA Swimming, the sport's governing body in the US, said no "anti-doping rule" had been violated.

But the federation said it wanted to send a strong message to Phelps because he had disappointed so many people.

Phelps won eight gold medals at the Beijing Olympics and has been feted as one of the world's greatest athletes.

The 23-year-old was caught on camera inhaling from a type of glass pipe which can be used for smoking cannabis.

Michael has voluntarily accepted this reprimand and has committed to earn back our trust
USA Swimming

The photo, which appeared in Britain's News of the World newspaper, was said to have been taken at a student party last November when Phelps was on a long break from training.

The Olympic star has apologised for his "regrettable behaviour", but did not say whether he had taken drugs.

USA Swimming said in a statement: "This is not a situation where any anti-doping rule was violated, but we decided to send a strong message to Michael because he disappointed so many people, particularly the thousands of USA Swimming member kids who look up to him as a role model and a hero.

"Michael has voluntarily accepted this reprimand and has committed to earn back our trust."

USA Swimming has also cut off its financial support to Phelps for the same three-month period.

Cereal and snack firm Kellogg has also reportedly said it will not renew a sponsorship contract with Phelps, on the grounds his behaviour is "not consistent with the image of Kellogg".

I thought the USOC would sweep it under the rug. Hmm, surprised every so often.

seriously, doesn't the media have anything more interesting to latch onto then the story of some youth smoking weed at school.

give me a break, and keep all the anti-drug soap-boxing to minimum.
