It's not so much about the person, but about what he has done. His efforts, along with others, have seriously dented the profit structure of Hollywood. Because of internet piracy ticket prices have fallen nearly everywhere, so that theaters can attract more people back. I remember $12 movie tickets back home. Not anymore!
Profits are not what they were 10 years ago. It's not the cameramen and stage hands, etc who hurt as a result. Those people are still needed. It's the executives and investors who have to make due with less and less. The movie business was for the longest time a rich man's game. If you had the money to sink into a movie production, you'd earn back a huge chunk of profit. Not so much today. And because of that you've got a lot of bitter rich people with their lawyers searching for aXXo.
It would be impossible to punish every downloader, so making an example of the best known pirate is obvious. If they ever do catch him, and he's an American, which he probably is (because of all the DVD screeners he gets), it will be very public, and very harsh, to try and scare away any copycats.
I applaud piracy, because I think the entertainment industry is overpaid from top to bottom. Why do movie executives, directors and producers deserve to earn huge salaries? They have a fun job, in an interesting industry. |

Tell that to your average bar band, comic book illustrator or independent artist of any kind. Though these people also often support piracy because it means exposure. Replace "entertainment industry" with "Hollywood" and you're pretty much on the money. |

Independants in every field suffer, while monopolies have all the benefits.
This applies to film, software, print, and music industries. There are exceptions, but they are few and far in between. |
