How can the construction worker guy work for thirty years and not have a nickel to his name? Construction doesnt pay that poorly. If that husband and wife duo each got a minimum wage job, they should at least be able to afford a ratty motel room. And cooking in a coffee tin? A bit much I think. All they need now is a stick, with a handkerchief wrapped around all their worldly possessions, propped against their shoulder as they walk down the road trying to catch the next empty box car.

Debts and unwise spending.

That's an interesting comparison/contrast with the "Depression Days" camp of 73 years ago. They say today's camp is in almost the same spot as 1936.

The big difference: The 1936 camp looks more like a temporary "rest stop" for broke Midwestern farmers. Dust Bowl escapees. Grapes of Wrathers. They were en route somewhere, California was their destination and life-raft, they'd crossed the country (camping along the way) to get there. So this was just one more 'camp' on the road. They'd run out of money and the economy was bad, but one senses they hadn't lost hope. They were looking up, looking ahead, hoping to start over.

The people in that 2009 camp, though... they aren't going anywhere, literally. They're Californians to begin with, they just ended up in this particular camp because this is where we they happened to be when they fell down and out of the economy.

Reminds me of the movie called " They Live" with Rodney Piper. Now we just need to find the Aliens.
