I've walked around w/open booze in every country in E. Asia that I've been to, even the PRC & Singapore(of course, in Singapore, what you do w/the empty container is an important issue). Never had a problem. Cops stopped me once here but I was on my way in a minute or two. Only hassle w/cops was in Japan, after I was assaulted by neo-militarists(not seriously, but assaulted nonetheless). Of course, it was ME that got the third degree from the local constabulary! |

Is it against the law to drink in public here? I thought it was fine, in fact just last night as I sat on abandoned chair in the street having a beer while my friend decided to take the plunge and visited one of the girls in the red light district a cop came by on his beat I guess, looked at me with some curiosity but didn't say a thing about the beer. |

The one time I was stopped by cops in the ROK, booze wasn't the issue. They de facto really could care less.... |

My supervisor in Japan told me that "open" alcohol was illegal in Japan.
but we used to walk by the cops all the time with open beer and they didn't say anything.
If I moved back to Canada, I'd really miss that about living Asia.
No matter where I go - Thailand, Philippines, Taiwan and Japan I can walk around with a can of beer and not worry about getting hassled. |

My friend got busted for hash (or the chemical in hash) in his system. He played he paid. Thrown in a jail cell with 7 other Korean guys in Seoul prison. He got lice and they shaved his head. The food was piss poor. 23 1/2 hours/day in his cell, 7 minute visits once a week with a lawyer who did nothing except take his mother's 5,000,000 won. He served his full 30 day sentence anyway, which he was given before he got the lawyer. Lost all his posessions (computer, camera, etc), his pay, and his bank account funds. Deported and can't come back for 5 years or at the discretion of immigration.
I don't sympatize with drug users here either. It's stupid. However it is very scary how easily you could be framed, seeing how there's no need for real evidence.
I was tested before in Ulsan. The cops just popped in one day at my school and told me I had to pee in a cup. All that happened was somebody reported seeing a foreigner smoking pot in a bar that I hung out in. I never knew if this was true or not. It scared the hell out of me, cause of how easy it would be to rig the test and throw me in jail. What could I really do about it? |

my understanding was that in most western countries you can only get done for possesion.
its crap that you can get done weeks after the act here. If you go overseas, smoke a spliff when you come back you can get busted..... |

Posession is key.. which is why you see so many tv scenes where they try to flush the evidence down the toilet, etc.
'Drug tests' are only for some employers.. usually federal jobs or high security type jobs.. as a condition for employment. If you fail them you wouldn't go to jail.. but you wouldn't get that particular job either. |

Sadly, drug testing is also increasing at a lot of minimum wage employers in the US. Wal-Mart, McDonalds, supermarkets, etc. When I graduated college I turned down a customer-service job at a bank in favor of a similar job doing computer-oriented customer service job because the bank insisted on a drug test.
I had nothing to hide, but they had no business with my piss! |

And what if you refused to give the test? Did the police have a warrant? Did you demand to speak to a lawyer or embassy rep. before you gave the test? |
