Yes, I am adopting the Korean value of loyalty to a company. Remember, Lush works for a company, not a hagwon. Many companies here treat foreigners very well. One must see the difference between individualism in the West and in Korea. Loyalty to the company actually helps one to look better in the eyes of his coworkers. He is considered a "team player." If one would like to look at this from an individualistic perspective, helping the team here is a means of helping the individual self, Lush.

Mr. X did it to himself. He ignored rule one for a thief, ie "Tell no one if you want to get away with it".

If he was calling as much attention to himself as he was it sounds to me like he had some problems with his actions as well, and was trying to clue people into it.

It's a done deal now, but personally OP if I'd gotten to talk to you before you told the man Wink . I'd have advised you to cut the guy a break.

I'm not saying that you had to join in, but if someone is stealing from the company, and feels compelled to let you in on it s/he is a individual with some personal problems.

How about,

"Man that's not a good idea you're doing the wrong thing. I can't let you do it so just drop this whole idea, or I'm going to have to let someone know what you're doing."

Give people the chance to do the right thing, and they usually will.

Cheers

PS

And all these people who say "There's nothing worse than a thief". Are you serious?? I can think of a lot of worse things a person could be... how about judgemental? Wink

LOL...I'd far rather you judge me than steal from me.

Too bad those other people didn't watch the AFN Commercials on "spy's in korea". Excessive photcopying is BAD. Did Mr.X have a sneaky, wiley look on his face while copying?

What is wrong with being judgmental. One problem with the world these days is that people no longer think it is pc to judge wrong behavior. Ironically, people are judgmental against being judgmental.

Kangnam you crack me up!!

Being judgemental is fun! Corporal is dead right. I enjoyed it! Wink

But, be fair people I think if you read the whole post you'll see exactly how I judge Mr.X's behaviour. I don't agree with the actions, but perhaps Mr.X is just in the middle of making a huge mistake.

Personally, in that scenario, I don't feel the need to do my utmost to ensure that he gets fired or arrested. And I'm not trying to have a go at the OP because he's the one person in this forum who was there, and s/he can judge the situation better than anyone here.

I don't know if X is stealing for his sick granny, or if it's been half an hour since his last rock of crack. Neither do you, that's all I was trying to say.

Oh and the tongue inserted in cheek much very with my judgemental crack. Wink (I thought the winky thing would be the big hint?)

Cheers people...

Well I am back from vacation and Mr. X is gone. The fax machines here store a copy of faxes that have gone out, which are then archived. Shocked That, and some other stuff, was the straw that broke the camels back for X. I was called into a meeting by my team leader, the section chief, my sections director and the freaking VP of marketing and thanked personally for my honesty. I think I am going to be employee of the month! Rolling Eyes I am going to lunch with my team today- I wonder what they think about what happened. I guess I will know shortly.

I dont regret what I did; it truly was my only option. I DO wonder what exactly happened to X but I am not foolish enough to ask. Oh well

I just spoke with the bosses about this. They were really thankful and are actively watching this guy now. I am glad I did this. Actually, after I posted that, I sat down and thought real long about it. The guy who told me actually forced me to expose him by his own selfish behavior.

I have had 2 other people ask me today what is wrong with Mr.X? He is really drawing attention to himself by his erratic behavior, which includes going to the copy machine 10-15 times an hour for 1 or 2 copies. Thankfully I wont be here when the poop hits the fan!

This episode is somewhat reminiscent of the AFN Korea spot about watching your acquaintances for unusual behavior that may be indicative or espionage.

Either that or an ESL 'moral dliemma' discussion topic. I think the best answer most students come up with is, "Speak to him directly, and tell him to stop it, or you will tell the director." But don't quote me.
