I have to disagree with this. I was at 14% body fat for a long time, and no matter how intensely I exercised, I couldn't get it any lower.
After several months of trying and thinking "if I just stay with it a bit longer, the weight will come off," I started dieting: 6 meals a day, lots of vegetables and lean meats, complex carbs in the morning and sugars after workouts, etc. It's starting to come off and now 10% is on the horizon..

Ofcourse, that's what a diet is. I'm not saying ONLY exercise will get rid of fat (especially if your metabolism is slow) as attention has to be paid to your food intake. However, what I'm trying to attack is weight loss products that people expect to drink/eat and magically lose weight. |

| Exercise is the only thing that works for me. Although if I stop eating after 6 p.m. my belly feels more flat... Perhaps it is this elusive bloat people are talking about. |

what about genetics? Isn't it true that some people have to fight off the genetics of becoming fat while someone else just doesn't have that problem at all?
I have seen people at my gym who seem fat or big, but run on that tread mill for an hour burn up a sweat! for the past 6 months this guy hasnt seemed to lose any weight.. maybe he goes out after the gym and pigs out on pork and Soju I don't know...
In my case.. I dont eat a lot.. never have been a big eater.. but now that I am in my 30's seem to put on weight around my gut If I dont work out for a couple months even though I don't eat a lot..
so only dieting does seem to work for some people...
but for me I have to work it off..
guess the combination of both is best... |

Read not long ago it's a myth that beer does it. The claim was it's what drinkers eat. Maybe it's the beer, food and lack of exercise. |

| On a related point, what the hell can I eat for breakfast that isnt coated in fat? I have tried eating fruit, I was eating 2 apples, 2 bananas and a pear before work and I was hungry again less than 3 hours later. That was my attempt at a 'diet' and it was rubbish. I realise dieting isnt gonna work for me, I just try and squeeze in as much good stuff to counter the crap as I can. |
I have a serving (1/2 cup) of oatmeal and a tablespooin of blueberries as well as a 4 egg omelet with garlic, mushrooms, onions, and cheese. Yum! Use a healthy oil for cooking. |

Spot reduction of fat is a myth. Some people do lose belly fat first or they only have excess flesh on the abdomen thus their diet/exercise burns the belly fat.
I put on weight in the over the last two years, for the last 6 months I have been dieting and exercising and have lost 15 lbs. For me slow weight loss is the best as I keep it off.
Eating a good breakfast is key. If you are full from the get go, most people tend not to eat rubbish the rest of the day. The 5 or 6 small meals is the best, I think, because you simply don't let yourself feel actually hungry. The emotional or craving for junk is something else.
I think that genetics is also a component of belly fat. My sister and I have totally different body shapes. She is tall and lean and only puts on weight around her waist. I tend to pack the pounds around the hips and bum. My belly gets very flat and my waist shrinks very quickly - the thighs and hips is another matter. It is taking serious dedication to shrink them back to pretty. My sister, on the other hand, has a devil of a time getting her midsection tight. She did it once, but, the result was ripped abs and scary bony rest of her.
However, there is bloat to contend with - eat fibrous foods, drink loads of water and add some green tea and active yoghurt to your diet to help beat the bloat. |

can NOT spot reduce.
another effing useless piece of advice for complete idiots.
can't hurt much though I suppose.
atramentous is right about a genetic component, people have different builds and retain fat in different places BUT if you have the discipline, it eventually has to burn off everywhere. |

It's not science. Burn more calories than you eat. That should be easy to do in Korea.
Stop buying ice cream or other obviously non-nutritional fattening stuff, not that hard.
America has so many fat people, it's insane. |

However, someone close to me recently had a heart attack and Im aware eating greasey bacon sandwiches for breakfast everyday could well send me the same way. But nothing else comes close to satisfying me and I dont have the time for cereal. |
Walk into the kitchen: 5 seconds
Get a bowl and a spoon: 10 seconds
Take out the box of cereal and carton of milk: 10 seconds
Pour cereal and milk into the bowl: 10 seconds
Put away cereal and milk: 10 seconds
Wash the bowl and spoon: 20 seconds
Aside from eating the cereal, it shouldn't take more than 1:05 to prepare cereal.
Anyways, when I'm not lazy and eating healthy/exercising, I tend to go for a high carb low fat diet. I usually stick with complex carbs and fruit but avoid sucrose and high fructose corn syrup. You lose weight faster with a low carb diet, but those tend to be pretty unhealthy. Using protein as your main source of energy is a good way to destroy your kidneys and clog your arteries.
For a healthy breakfast, I recommend a bagel with peanut butter, a bowl of oatmeal or granola, or a slimfast shake. |

While the United States does have a large portion of the overweight to obese population of the world, it is unfair to say "geez, Americans are so fat" when the obesity rates all over our "western" world are skyrocketing. The British Isles also have a weight problem, as does Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and Canada. One of the fastest growing rates is in France. France was tradionally one of the "thin" nations. Even South Korea made the top 30 fattest countries.
It isn't quite fair to say that just the Americans are fat or obese. A lot of "developed" countries are facing the same health crisis.

i was 260 lbs and got to 185 in less than a year with no pain.
i stopped eating processed food as much as possible. just old fashioned korean food for the most part.
i drank only water and beer.
i rode a bike or walked.
the pounds just melted away.
when i got down to about 220 i started going to the gym and remainder fell off super fast.
PS- i kept a food diary and a weekly weight chart. |

If other countries have a large obesity rate, it is probably from American style food.
It is a problem, unique to modern American culture, and thus needs to be recognized as one. I feel that skinny people get a tougher time than fat people in America.
Besides being unhealthy to the obese individual, it is also a waste of resources. Besides eating more, the person also uses more food containers, cans, and other harmful environmental packaging.
There should be a strong cultural backlash to the amount of obesity in America. And I am from America, and love the country, but hate our ignorance on obvious issues. |
