I've always said that people on benefits should have to enroll in some kind of program where they run on a treadmill that produces electricity. How much electricity they produce would be a function of how much they earn. This would eliminate both unemployment and power shortages.
Maybe. |

Juregen,
I agree that our cultures are why America has more obesity than Belgium, but I disagree with you about socialism.
One reason I'm thin is because I buy (or grow) my own food and drink. The beverage I drink the most is tap water.
When I'm in line at the grocery store to purchase, say, a bag of apples, it seems like there's just about always some fatass in line in front of me with a heaping buggy full of Doritos, Coca-Cola, pizzas, Little Debby snack cakes, Cheetos, and a bunch of other bullshit. How do they pay for it? Food stamps. So my tax dollars buy their name brand bullshit that makes them obese. Even when I buy cola, I don't buy name brand, I buy the less expensive store brands -- since I'm the one who has to pay for it. I don't buy as much food -- since I'm the one who has to pay for it. I buy cheaper food like fruit and vegetables for the most part -- since I'm the one who has to pay for it. These people who spend other people's money on food buy the expensive items which are usually more fattening. And they buy them in larger quantities since they're spending other people's money and don't have to budget. |

| I can think of a number of jobs someone who weights 24 stone could do. Some of them are even able to be done from home. For instance, I knew a woman once who stayed at home to take care of her children, so to earn extra money she did telemarketting work for a company right out of her own house. Lots of jobs like that are availible, so even if they absolutely refuse to leave their homes, I don't see why they couldn't do something like that, if only to make up for the budget deficiencies they claim to currently suffer from. |

I disagree with such comparisons as "America vs. Belgium." Not an appropriate or useful comparison by any means. Good for scoring propaganda points, however. Otherwise, far too simplistic. For example, your "Belgium does not suffer obesity" sounds an awful lot like M. Ahmadinejad's "we have no homosexuals in Iran, unlike your country..."
In any case, America is not and has not been since FDR if not since the Progressives, a purely capitalist country. It has social-welfare programs. These sometimes differ from state to state. But I assure you it has social-welfare programs -- whether you approve of them or not, it makes no difference to me. They exist. There is much more going on in America's political economy than hidden hands and their movements. Your last sentence seems to recognize this. But then your introductory "America is capitalist" and "Belgium is socialist" becomes confused, muddled.
What exactly is your point? |
The "America is capitalist", "Belgium is socialist" comes from a generally accepted view, but as I stated later, I don't believe those distinctions exist anymore.
The "Belgium does not suffer Obesity", was maybe too abbreviated, I should have added "as much as in America". In my lifetime I have seen about 5 obese people, and all 5 of them were undergoing medical treatment.
Whether I use Belgium, or Europe as a comparison, in order to compare, one needs at least 2 distinct entities to do so . How else would you solve it?
My point is that Obesity is the result of Education and Culture, rather then Economic. |

Food stamps is the key element here.
First of all, how many countries use food stamps? As far as my knowledge goes, I think they only used them in Russia and America during peace time, most other countries only used them in war time. Unless we of course assume America is still at war .... but that is another discussion altogether.
So I would say that food stamps are Communist rather then Socialist .
The basic element of Socialism is Equal Opportunities. The basic element of Capitalism is Individuality. The basic element of Communism is Equality.
We can easily see that a prosperous society has all three elements worked into it.
I am pretty sure my views are not 100% correct, but these views are a result of my education and experience. |

Totally agree. One of my best friend's has a really fat family, she's fat too. The thing is they are well off cause the mother takes care of teenagers who are in group homes, etc. The teenagers live with my friend's family and the government pays a nice sum for it. Being too fat is no excuse. |

You seem to be mis understanding the point of the conversation.
Belgium is like France, Cheese eating Surrender Monkeys. Yes I am aware that this stance is harsh, but reality is a harsh mistress, and some times we just have to like the torture. Belgium is a country filled with land dwelling yacht salesmen. Nothing more than this. No matter how hard they try, they CAN"T SELL YACHTS, and believe you me, they have tried to sell me many a yacht. Two in fact yesterday. But, I sternly told them no, and to go back home to socialist momma and cry to Socialist father while singing, Our Socialist Country Tis of The Sweet Land of Security, Oh liberty I do not miss thee. To which they of course absconded and hurried themselves back into their base camp.

You may ask, what is the point of this?
There is no point. |
