Listen to Henry Rollins and ignore techno

I agree he's got some great things to say about crystal meth too.
There hasn't been much good music or a great subculture since punk

In your opinion perhaps. A bit sad though...you must have a very dated music collection.

The cultural correlations between punk and techno are actually numerous. In my opinion techno is essentially high-tech punk...cyber-punk perhaps... and is an extension and amalgamation of punk and various other earlier alternative movements. If you look at the early days and the emergence of techno as a movement: it was originally an extremely underground, DIY, experimental, anti-authoritarian, future focussed movement that encouraged freedom of expression and active participation among many other things.

Like nearly every other subculture it has been bastardised as time has gone on and what it is today is often a hollow shell, even sometimes the direct opposite of what it originally was. The same can be said of every other subculture though and like every other subculture there are some remnants of the original spark to be found. Unfortunately most people seem to base their opinion on a few visits to a club or a novelty trip to a "rave party". Things are far more diverse than that.

It is always inadvisable to comment from a point of ignorance.

Henry Rollins doesn't like techno...so what? I actually find that he comes across as a narrow minded grumpy old man in that clip. I understand he is most likely generalising for comic value and doubt he would write off a whole form of music that has been around for close to 30 years in an actual conversation. It's the same as a jazz guitarist dissing a punk guitarist with their simple 3-chord songs. It's pointless arguing and it is an elitist attitude. Let people create in any way they can and want to, I say.

I do agree that the word "musician" is thrown around a bit too loosely with regard to techno. The words "composer" or "producer" are closer to what the majority of people making "techno" actually do. There are of course many exceptions to this rule.

Nobody has to like techno. Nobody has to like anything.

Your right about Henry Rollins in that clip. It reminds me of Metal heads or hippies putting down punk in the early eighties. That's not to say I don't like it or agree with what he's saying.

Techno ruined my trip to India. Maybe I shouldn't have gone to Goa. Well live and learn and I made sure I gave the full moon party in Thailand a miss because I didn't want to listen to that rubbish.

I hate techno for the same reason I hate new wave . I like the sound of an electric guitar. I also like a band that has a human playing drums.

He's been grumpy since he was born, that is why he is Henry Rollins. If he was anything less no one would listen to him. He wanted to *beep* on the floor and break shit at 20 and he wants to do it now as well, calling him a grumpy old man is way missing the point.

He's basically ripping off Jello Biafro who was the frontman to a much better band. When the Dead Kennady's split up Biafro got into Voice Poetry.

Jello's lyrics are much funnier

here's somrthing from To Drunk to F______
You give me head it makes it worse
Take out your f_____ retainer and put it in your purse

Or

You cry just like the baby in Erasarhead

Dead Kennady's were a better band but Rollin's in more relevant today and he was talking about techno.

Okay, I was going to post an entire two page manifesto here, but I'll be brief instead.

Most people arguing in this thread honestly have no idea what Techno is. It sounds like half the time they're confusing it with Trance, which is an entirely different beast. Broad generalisations and outdated opinions all around.

I find it sad how some people have to demean an entire field of music they have little to no experience with.

I know DnB can be found anywhere, but sometimes it's hard to find venues for Jungle. But, where there's Jungle, there's usually Dub.

Out of interest, where in "anywhere" can DnB be found? I only care for it on special occasions but my brother loves that stuff and he'll be visiting again soon. I didn't manage to show him a DnB place last time. Name a venue, please? Although I've never looked for it in Korea I'm surprised I've never run in to it if it's so common.
