It's real and its French. If you have ever tried Absinthe though you will likely be aware that its reputation is exaggerated. No one is going to drink one or two shots and start hallucinating. Instead I find that one just becomes more relaxed and introspective than one would drinking other alcohols which is perhaps why it gained an a following among many artists and writers so many years ago. The few scientific studies that have been done of the rare bottles of absinth that were still preserved from almost a hundred years ago actually show that the thujone content wasn't as high as many people imagined.
There is an article in Wired that one can access online that goes into a lot more detail about this including why some believe it was made illegal in the first place (i.e. homemade brew may have been dangerous and far more hallucinogenic)
