Not just here, but many places in Asia have the mentality that working more hours=greater productivity.

Yet people that put in 12 hour days and people that put in normal, 8 hour days and leave at 5 tend to have equal levels of productivity (and even the lazy slobs in the U.S. are still more productive than the Chinese, Koreans or Japanese!).

Heck even the French and Germans with their 12 week holidays stay productive.

I have been talking to both westerners and Koreans about exactly this topic. I am all for getting ahead and doing well for yourself and your family (if you have one), but these people are going to wake up 60 years old and realize they pissed away 40+ years working 6 days a week at 12 hours a day for what? There has to be a limit! Sometimes a see a very sad society around me. One that is driven by money and too much materialism. No soul, which I believe is contained in their cell phones. I have never seen a people so enamored by an electronic device. I see Koreans molesting them constantly.

The problem is that if you`re not working your ass off then you`re seen as a delinquent. As a salaryperson in this country, you need to be "productive" to get ahead or stay in the game. If you`re not willing to do that then there`s another drone that will take your place.

The problem is that they actually believe it! And this all brought on by who? employers from way back! it's obvious why employers would want to sell this idea. Of course there are times when putting in extra effort is needed but overall the employers don't understand that their not getting efficiency/productivity (i didn't miss your "productive", Wink ). It's always amazed me when a boss calls weekly meetings for 4 hours (korean teachers) then expects them to be productive that day when they have 8 more hours in front of them. On top of that, they've even stayed out late the previous night (don't miss that place). The workers wouldn't think of telling him they're getting burnt out, instead they say they are moving away and quit. Wouldn't want to stop playing the game!
