Well, if promoting diversity is the justification here, I guess we should just let any soldier who wants to hand out gay porn to the Muslim masses. After all, that's also something that's been suppressed by Islam.
And the really ironic thing about all this is that, as a result of the Iraq war, the indigeonous Iraqi Christians have fled the country in droves. Great way to start a conversion campaign. |

They did not flee because of the US Army.
They, and a whole load of others, christian or no, fled because of sectarian persecution committed by muslim groups.
But there is a chance now for a better future than was possible before the war.
Agreed the US army is not a missionary force, but at the same time, if some of their members wish to share and express their faith to Iraqis, then they should be allowed.
Freedom of religion is one of the things the US, and by extension, their army, stands for. Are you saying that we should let the enemy dictate and limit the US mission in Iraq? The terrorists want a repressive Islamic state. Why pander to them?
If as you suggest, christians were allowed to operate in Iraq before the invasion, why change that now? Many US servicemen have christian motivations- they sign up to protect that freedom of religion. |

US soldiers also sign up to defend freedom of speech. But if some G.I. Joe were to drive around Baghdad with a bullhorn shouting "Death to the scumsucking imperialist American fascists", you can bet that he would be seeing the inside of a military prison in a matter of hours. Even though that would be protected speech on the streets of Anytown USA.
Soldiers on duty do not have the exact same rights as civilians back home. I think this is a basically understood aspect of military life. |
