I was not planning on having a computer in my own place while I was there, but am planning on using internet cafes or taking to a place to have them developed and/or put on cd.
If I have them put on cd I can mess around with them later in the photo software, right?
Also...I am leaning towards buying a canon powershot A70. I've read a lot about digital cameras the last few days and tried some out at the store and that one seems the best buy for me. I'll probably be buying here in the U.S. within the next month so I can use it on some trips I'm taking here.
Thanks for all the advice!

What really comes into factor is the exchange rate between Korea and Canada.
i checked out the price of the canon A70 on futureshop.ca and the price is $449.99 that converted into korean is 399,224 won.
the cheapest A70 i found on a korean website (daum) is 415,000 won. which is $476.
AFter tax it is probably cheaper to buy the camera in Korea than it is in Canada |

Originally I was fixed on getting the A70 but ended up getting the 4MP Casio QV-R40 for $348 including tax online during Boxing Week and have loved it. Excellent picture quality and prints look great. There are other good ones out there as well, though I agree that getting an A70 in Korea is cheaper than getting it in Canada. They know everyone wants one and have avoided discounting it during sales. |

Casio makes some nice cameras too. The one you are talking about is literally like a bar of aluminium they hollowed out and put the components in -- a total tank, yet not too terribly heavy.
I really love the EXS line (the card-like ones that have the charger). One even plays .mp3. |

Wow.. great quality photos on that, although I read some complaints online that the feature set is degraded quite a bit in some ways (I'm sure the review was done by someone being hyper-critical though).
I'm sure Canon had to take away some features -- or why else would you bother buying their more expensive model -- even if you are a professional?
Fabulous photos. |

Yes.. it's NOT a good deal in Korea. Nor is the EOS-10D, its big brother. DSLRs seem to still have the "Korea premium" on them. |

Purchase your camera elsewhere ... not Korea. Prices are higher here. |
Though I said this in my Yongsan Guide last year, this is no longer an absolute truth, though it used to be. Now, for the first time, many models are cheaper in Korea than in other countries, provided you buy online, not from a real live retailer.
I'm headed to the US next week so I investigated the prices of cameras at Best Buy, Circuit City, CompUSA and Wal-mart in the US, thinking I'd take advantage of the trip. I discovered that some cameras are actually cheaper in Korea than the US. The camera I purchased, an HP 850, was quite a bit less here in Korea (from Interpark) than at the American stores. It's possible HP is dumping them here, but this was also true for many Olympus models (which happen to be built in Korea), and for the Minolta Z-1.
A good Korean search engine for prices is www.omi.co.kr. If you buy in Korea, you'll also get a warranty that's good here. Most cameras purchased in the US *don't* have warranties good outside the US (Canons, Sonys and Kyoceras are among the exceptions to this rule). By the same token, most warranties on cameras bought here aren't good in the US. |
Wow... that's interesting. Your link didn't work, so I checked www.enuri.com. Some models are about equal with US prices. (The Canon A70, for example). I wonder if they were losing so much business to the illegal operations in Nandemun that they had to come down? Hmmm...
Keep in mind that a lot of those online stores which offer the "lowest" price are avoided by Koreans because they are shady. Same thing in the USA.
I priced some cameras and found that prices have come down in Korea -- closer to USA prices on average. Maybe a few cheaper here and there, but about the same. Others outrageously higher here or there -- depends on the camera, and probably when it was introduced here as opposed to there, or demand at the time.
I guess it comes down to where you feel a warranty is most needed, or where you feel most comfortable buying. |

Anything SLR has a terribly high price in Korea. Just ask Jaderedux. I sold her my Nikon SLR last year. Even the used SLR's in Korea are way overpriced. More than a lot of new SLR's back home.
They probably just followed suit with the DSLR Rebel because of that. |

Dave Sperling brought his EOS-10D when he was here in October. Here are some of his Korea pictures: http://www.pbase.com/davesperling/seoul1
There's a picture there of a woman sitting in a restaurant. The light in the restaurant is pretty low, and he's not using a flash. He's also not looking through the camera when he's taking it - he's holding it down by his waist with his hands. The picture's in perfect focus and perfect exposure, though she's several tables away.
My camera can't do that.
Oh- regarding the link - try it without the dot at the end:

When really discussing pricing in Korea it's inappropriate to compare US prices to Korean Web Sites, e-malls, and so on. The deals are obtained going to the Electronic Marts around the area -- Yongsan, Technomart, and a small handful of others.
You will get new items, as in not used or factor defects, etc. and will be able to negotiate over price, if you're into that sort of thing. For the most part you will have no issue resolving any price issues and thus beating nearly most home-based prices. You will also have no issue with warranty and problems; at least while still here. But that is able to be resolved as well.
But to blindly say that you shouldn't buy it here is a joke. You WILL find it, you WILL find it cheaper and ...
Your choice though |

I'm afraid you're incorrect on this, with regards to cameras. Yongsan merchants cannot match the on-line price for camera goods.
Shops near Namdaemun, however, may give you better deals. The cameras these stores sell tend to be grey-market units without warranties.
I spend a LOT of time in Yongsan, and I'm comfortable in saying Yongsan is an excellent place to shop for other electronic goods. But not cameras. |

I just care about digital movies.
I'm learning dance and I need something to record a rough sketch of what I learned so I can go home and practice. Quality is not important, but having a lot of time (movie time3 or 4 min) would be nice.
Any advise?
Also, any tips on bargining? I hate it. The last time I went, the sales clerk was terrible, mostly because he didn't seem to keen on actually showing me the/a product. His other tiff was letting out loud moans when I didn't buy the product he wanted. |

just want to add my humble comment here...
i just bough a canon a70 a few weeks ago - and i love it. i bought it online at www.auction.co.kr (korean ebay). i paid 384,000 won which included a 128MB compact flash.
by the way, i usually check between auction and www.gmarket.co.kr
for anything i'm thinking of buying. i've gotten amazing deals from both including my digi cam, water mattress, ski clothes, slow cooker...you name it!
you'll need to know korean to do all of it. i browse myself and then have a korean friend do the final details of ordering...and they deliver within 3 days to my door!
happy shopping! |
