Wow, you NA guys/girls are lucky! Two 32 kg bags! When travelling from Europe you only get to take 20kg! You can get away with 25 easily, once I even got away with 35, but there's no way they'll let you take more than that! Hand luggage is max 10kg, which they never check, but recently they have been pretty strict on the size restrictions for hand luggage.

Wish I could bring two 32 kg bags with me from Europe!

you got away with 35kgs? who did you fly with and where to? i'm going home soon and i would like to take some of the stuff i have accumulated back with me.

I think it was KLM to Tokyo, but that was a couple of years ago. I used KLM again to go home for Seollal this year, and they had this paper on the check-in desk in Incheon that they would enforce the weight restrictions and that passengers would have to pay for every extra kilo starting Sept 2003... We brought back about 67 kilo's for 3 persons, they didn't say anything about that (but is was only 7 extra kilos for 3!). When I travel alone my luggage is usually around 25 kg, never had to pay.

Not too happy about KLM service (the stewardesses/stewards are so RUDE compared to their Asian counterparts!) but it was the cheapest ticket.

Recently all airline companies seem to have gotten more strict about hand luggage too.. not so much about weight restrictions (I think you are usually allowed up to 10 kg) but they always visually inspect the size, and if it looks too big they will measure it and you might have to check it in. And pay for the extra weigth of course!

Oh, I forgot, a very good way to carry lots of heavy luggage from Tokyo to Europe: stay in the ANA hotel in Narita, they have a check-in counter in the hotel, and ... they don't weigh your luggage there!!!

One kiwi I knew in Japan got really annoyed when they wanted to make her pay for the extra luggage, she started taking out all her heavy clothing right in front of the check-in desk and put on a few extra sweaters and coat etc. She still had to apy, but a lot less than what they originally wanted to charge her. LOL.

Question

i realize this thread has been dead for a while, but i'm wondering how i'm supposed to fit everything into only two bags. there are so many posts about bringing enough deodorant to last a year, bags of your favorite candy, etc. how does that work? just pay extra??

You can bring as much as you can lug around if you are willing to pay for it. If you get a ticket for $660 to $800 and you get like $1250 air money, then you can easily pay for a 3rd check on bag. You can pay the airline for your 3rd bag regardless of how you got your ticket. It was like $127 for a 3rd bag early last year.

BEST ADVICE I can give is to skip the big suitcases and pack light.

You won't need 75% of the stuff you think you will and if you are packing more than 20kg including spices, toiletries and spare shoes you have packed TOO much.

You can get just about everything here now. It is NOT like it was 10 years ago.

There is no limit to how much luggage you can bring. If you're willing to pay for it, you can bring it. As others have said, it will cost you.

That said, I'm not sure why you would ask on a forum about living in Korea. Each airline is different, and each airline is free to change their policies at ANY time. You need to contact them in regards to their policies.

It might be cheaper to pay the overage then to have it shipped to you later as well. I got a fairly small box shipped to me and it cost $50. Would have been cheaper to just go over on weight than to mail a few boxes.
