Well there you go. Seems my circle of Korean and Western friends never deemed it worthy of mentioning it to me. Might check it out this vacation.

I'm a country boy myself, so my favorites are out in the country:

Jeju (bike around it)
Jirisan NP (hike, hike, hike)
Gyeongju (ultra-cool ancient capital of the Shilla)
Seokgaram Grotto & Bulguksa
Seoraksan NP (hiking) & Sokcho

I'd have to agree with Tobias on these top 5. If you are into hiking, and the outdoors, then don't miss these 5.

If you want to see some Shilla history, then get to Gyeongju.

I'm a history buff so I'm definitely gonna have to hit up Gyeongju sometime when I make it to Korea, looks pretty sweet.

Gyeongju is one of the coolest places in Korea. I've been there many times. It's a great place to hike around and have a picnic. There's a great Shilla museum there, a big astronomical tower, and many big burial mounds like you'll see in the old Hopewell Indian sites in the Ohio Valley of the USA. What is more, it's a great place to shop. The downtown area is like a huge mall with streets running through it. Some of these are cobblestone. It's a great place to go around December 15th for xmas shopping. Bulguksa temple is up in the mountains nearby, as is Seokgoram grotto. Korail runs right through town, so you can take a train from Seoul or Busan.

When all the mounds are lit up at night, Gyeongju is one romantic place.

I just spent a few days on Baengnyeongdo, off the North Korean coast, in the west sea. Highly recommended. I stayed at the Moonhwa Hotel for 40k a night. They ran good tours around the island for 25k. The boat to Dumujin Rocks was an extra 15k. The fast catamaran boat over from Incheon, takes 4 hours each way, & costs around 60k each way.

There IS a very cool Chinese restaurant west of the Ulsan express bus station. I never got to hit that place, but I will next time I'm in town.

The red one? Pretty expensive. There is a very cool Turkish restaurant on the other side of the road near Hyundai though.
