I got a local check and have been here 7 months. Everything was fine. I haven't left the country. I tried to change jobs and they said I need a state or federal check and now I'm out of a job. I'm from Ohio and because of fingerprinting I think it may take about a month! Any advice?

I am heading to the Sheriff's office in Cleveland tomorrow. I will see how things go and let you know. I will ask them about mailing fingerprint forms in.

Yes, getting a check from another state, a state in which you have a legitimate connection to, would be in order. Cousin in Michigan? Get one from Michigan. Great grandma in California? Use her address and get one from Cally. It definitely should not take a month to get this thing. I've talked to FBI folks who say it takes about 3 weeks to get an FBI check.

Thanks!
I think I'll start that just in case.
Any idea which State check is fastest
or doesn't require fingerprints?

Ohio update:

I tried the Sheriffs' office and they said they only do county. Called the FBI (304-625-5590)and said I had to send fingerprints to WV, then after getting my report back I would need to mail it to the WV Sec of State (304-558-6000) for the apostille.

I finally got ahold of the people who do the BCI (740-845-2000)(electronic scan of the fingerprints and send them in) and was told to go to a background check company and have them do it. Then I would need to fax a note into the BCI head office (740-845-2633 Attn. Jodi) telling them to notarize 2 copies and send them to me pretty please.

I did this about an hour ago, hopefully it will work and come in before I am to leave for my C4 job (which did accept my local CBC).

Good luck!

Let me add an example...one recruiter told me that I needed an apostiled diploma even though I had the original. It was just bs. I went to another recuiter and no mention of apostilled diploma...they took the original. Recruiters are a bad source of information. Stick to the immigration website and follow what they say.

For Ohio, I found a place to get a background check on here: http://ag.state.oh.us/business/fingerprint/data/index.asp

Nevertheless, Korean immigration didn't accept my perfectly legal, state, apostilled background check (from a state of 10 million people), so I had to go with a local check from the police station (from a village of 3000), and an affadavit at the U.S. embassy in Korea. It worked.

Well, speaking from experience, both Missouri and Kansas don't require fingerprints. Missouri takes about 3-4 weeks by mail and Kansas only takes about 10 days.
