Have any gals here tried Seasonale? Or a quarterly period birth-control drug? I'd heard about it several years ago and have seen tv ads for it lately.

Maybe you already know this, but this is just the same as any pill, they just only have the sugar pills every three months. You can do it yourself with any combined oral contraceptive brand except for the tri-phasic ones. Just skip the sugar pills for two cycles and take them on the third cycle. It's slightly less than 3 months (cos you've lost two weeks which are presumably replaced with active pills on Seasonale), but the net effect is almost the same.

Yeah, screaming can happen even without being a drama queen. Cramps can hurt like you wouldn't believe. Let her go somewhere to lie down, if possible, away from everyone staring at her, or possibly with a best (female) friend if that would help her calm down. It's not fun to be stared at by the whole class when you're in agony.

And also be sure to rule out appendicitis. That also causes stabbing pains in about the same place as menstrual cramps, but appendicitis can be fatal if not treated.

Also, just in general, sometimes zinc can really help. Zinc lozenges are great. Oysters have a lot of zinc, too, I believe. Google zinc in foods and see what you come up with. Women who have lots of exercise, rest, and especially nutrients in their diet tend to be less crampy--cramps are a sign that something's not completely right with your body. If you're a male teacher, which you seem to be, you can't really tell her advice about how to avoid cramps. Just don't go there. But see what you can do about providing occasional zinc-rich snacks to the entire class, or other healthy snacks that might get them all in a better mood to learn.

yes.
i don't know why you keep up with the period thing.
there are people that get very painful cramps. just because the people around you back home didn't (or didn't tell you about it) doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

if she feels sick, let her go to the nurse's office or something.

i often had to miss afternoon classes when i was in school because i was in so much pain. age has nothing to do with it.

I dont think those girls know of Midol either. It`s probably real unless she does it every English class...

When they are that bad, Midol can't even touch cramps. I have had them so bad that I have taken 6 Midol in one day and then had resorted to prescription pain killers and still ended up staying in bed all day until they had finally passed the next day. I hadn't had them too bad since I started taking birth control and then after I have been off of it for 4 months now, they have returned and I was so grateful the last time I started that it was the weekend and I didn't have classes or I think I would have cancelled them. I'm 27 by the way, no age has nothing to do with the gut wrenching pain you can feel some of those months.

I knew friends in HS that would miss 2 days because they couldn't move.

One of my phys ed teachers was a real bag and didn't believe cramps could be that bad because she'd never experienced it. Man did I hate her.

Yes.

For the life of me though, I can't understand why they seem sooo dead set against ibrupofen or some other pain-killer/muscle relaxer for cramps.

Yes you can do it with any bc pill, but Seasonale is definitely not the same as others. I took it for a while and it was horrible. I probably shouldn't go into the details, but it made me sick and I had to switch back to orthotricyclen.

definitely!

i saw this documentary about korean high school girls suffering from extremely painful cramps during their periods. going to school during their period was out of the question and it even showed this one girl faint in the bathroom 'cause it hurt her so much.

they were advised to incorporate more veggies and less meat into their diets and they all said they felt better.

i think keeping your tummy warm helps too.

I have had a couple of ex's that used to get really bad cramps. Buscopan used to work well, it's a abdominal muscle relaxant. Pretty sure it's over the counter here as well. (also works well when you get stomach cramps from deli-belly

My ex-wife also got them really, really bad. And life for me was a living hell during those times. She was like Jekyll and Hyde.

I used to work construction when I was younger with a fundamentalist Christian who truly believed that womankind's monthly visitor was the price they had to pay as penance for Eve tempting Adam in the Garden of Eden. I thought he was joking at first but found out he was very serious. I just had to shake my head.
