Anyone remember Sapporo Dark? That was alright.
Also the Hitachino beers while not outstanding, were servicable enough. |

| I never had Sapporo Dark. I did have kirin dark and kirin's hefeweizen. both were good but were higher than import prices so...when it came to 350 yen for a kirin wheat beer and 280 for a bass pale ale, you can guess which i picked. |

My fave is OB as it has the best taste.
Next is Cass. It has the worst taste 9that weird metaliccy taste) but gets you the most pissed.
Last is Hite. Taste not as good as OB, but better than Cass. Too weak and doesn't get you pissed enough |

Agreed, at least when it comes to whatever kind of Asahi they sell at Buy the Way and Family Mart. It could just be that I'm a snob about drinking out of a can, and that's the way Asahi is usually sold here. I don't know anything about the proper vocabulary for describing beer, but I would say Kirin tastes much richer and fuller than Asahi.
Out of the three major Korean beers, I like Hite the best, because it's the most watered down, i.e. least offensive. It doesn't taste good, but it's mildly refreshing while cold. I find Cass to have a subtle stank, and OB to have a not-so-subtle stank, like beer left in the sun. Cafri is a poor man's Corona (not that Corona is the bees knees). Cass Red has a weird flavor to mask it's stronger alcohol content, like drinking medicine with lemonade.
I'm not trying to speak about beer with authority, by the way. These are just my impressions. |

Beer in a can is much better in Korea. Better is a very relative term in this case I know. The fact is that bee is transported in the back of pick-up trucks and stored exposed to the sunlight. Brown bottles just don't protect the beer from going skunk.

We definitely agree on this.
I think if you are going to rate the beers you like here, you should quantify the comparison with what you drink in the real world.
For myself I drank Labbat Blue in the States and enjoy OB Blue here.
I would rate Cass as my second choice and (S)Hite as my third. |

Stout/Cafri are the Korean beers of choice...
Cass Red is the get drunk faster cheaper beer...
I drink the 2x beer if I need to socially drink, but don't feel well. |

Cass Lemon is the current 'love' in my life.
If that is out of stock - then Hite it is.
And ANY beer out of a can is just disgusting. I may not be able to tell the difference between certain beers - but I CAN tell the difference between bottle vs can. Ick. |

Ahhh but Malt Liquor out of the can....
In the complete opposite direction some Steel Reserve or a Mickey's would hit the spot from time to time.
And this just dawned on me, Camo Black Ice or whatever it is tastes like Beer and Soju mixed together- awful but you know it's working. |

In order of least disgusting to most disgusting,
Korean beer tastes like...
1: Shite
2: Ass
3: BO
I need some t-shirts with these logos.
Korean beer I will drink = Cafri (w/ a lemon wedge) or Stout. |

In Korea, glass bottles are the cheapest and most common and cans are slightly more expensive. The plastic bottles seem to be making headway, though - and I'd say that's the worst of the lot.
In Japan, I swear 95% of the market is cans. I only commonly saw glass bottles served at restaurants.
Wonder why this is.
I usually prefer a glass bottle, but with crap beer it doesn't really matter. The slight metallic taste of a can might actually improve the flavor. |

A few years back a local non-drinking No Rae Bang had a stock of non-alcoholic Hite, it was called "Hate" I kid you not. I wish I had bought a couple of cans of Hate just for novelty's sake, I can't find it anywhere anymore.
My order (without the taste test):
1. Hite
2. OB
3. Cass
It's been a couple of years since I last had an OB though, it's not as common in the middle of the country I guess. I've sworn off Cass entirely, vile filth. |
