Hhhmmm Sorry but I've gotta disagree. Firstly, it wasn't so much a case of the US withdrawing aid from the North that really made things crumble but the fall of the Soviet Union.
Secondly, you can't seriously think that the States (and other developed countries let's not forget!) is just holding the door open for "happy prosperous" nations to be invited in to some free market love in. If that were the criteria, South Korea would never have made it in the first place. The third world is a good 50-60 years behind the first world and that's exactly where the people in power want it to stay, what ever their form of government.
Lastly, the list of C.I.A. toppled governments in Asia and South America totally refutes your notion of the US being too cashed up to dirty its hands with strong arm tactics. Sure, there mightn't be US boots on the ground but who arms the thugs? It's because, they're "freakin' loaded" that it happens. And before you argue you it. No, it's not to install democratic governments but to protect business interests.
I think you are totally spot on with one observation though. Money does indeed talk. It's just a pity it talks for so few of us. |
