No kidding. I love bicycling and I bike every single day. And fixies are terrible bikes for getting around and doing real things on bicycle, like shopping, riding across town, going up and down hills. Just terrible.
Fixies are meant for doing tricks and stunts. Besides that, they aren't good for anything, they make the riding more difficult in fact. If you do any kind of serious riding, these bikes are crap. They are only good for cruising around on flat ground, and not even good for that really.
It's just people jumping on the bandwagon. Conforming to a supposed non-conformist style. Doing something in an attempt to be part of the cool crowd. Trying to be different.
These bikes are ALL about image for 95% of the people riding them. So lame. So ridiculous how these bikes have become part of this neo-hipster style. |

| these bikes are iconic to hipsters preaching the benefits of fixed gear while they will never bring up the real reason for using them- to bang other hipster losers. nothing really techincally mindblowing about them, except for the satisfying bj from the attracted hipster loser. Reason for riding fixies in korea is to get said bj from kgirl who just returned from studying in vancouver/melbourne who already performed bj on all the other hispter baristas there. Is my logic flawed? |

The hipster/hippie scene used to be cool.
But now, it's totally gotten taken over by rich kids and complete tools who are not really down with anything except partying, a fashion statement, and a superficial liberal persona.
These people are not edgy, counter-culture and hardcore like they used to be. They are like harmless little puppy dogs, going through a little rebellious phase before they move into the professional world.
It's basically the same thing that happened with the punk rock scene in the 90's. It went totally mainstream, got totally watered down and became ridiculous.
Would you all agree on that? |

Can't you haters appreciate the beauty of a nice fixie?
Can't you haters understand that mastering fixie riding is an interesting challenge?
Can't you haters understand the desire to be part of the "cool" crowd?

Thanks man. I've had a lot of writing jobs before and it's turned me into a writing machine I guess. |

Not really man. Seriously, most people just see fixie riders as complete tools. You all are not viewed as "cool" by people outside your group, although you think you are. So if you're gonna do it, just realize that you are loathed by many.
It's not the bike itself that's bad (although those bikes are pretty bad) it's the culture surrounding them that is annoying and ridiculous. It has become a total bandwagon of posers.
When I watch videos of people doing badass dangerous tricks on fixies, it is fairly impressive and I give them props. But for the person who just rides it around to look cool, no props at all. Just riding a fixie around town is no accomplishment worthy of respect. |

| Fixies are fun to ride, but I hate riding with others who ride them. And a fixie is definitely NOT my bike of choice. |

Each year between December and late February I used to ride my fixie 12-15 hours per week for it's intended purpose, making me a faster racer. The outfits I wore were arguable worse looking than hipster-kid duds now. In the end it made me hate riding, my no-no place hurt, and I was not markedly faster than my other racer buddies who did more intense, varied workouts on geared bikes.
So, it's not my BOC either. Besides, who doesn't like coasting? |

Exactly. Fixed gear bikes don't even give you much better of a workout than standard bikes. Most pro cyclists never even touch fixed gears, they just do real workouts.
If you really want to build up core strength, find a huge hill and ride up and down it. Or try to go crazy and ride across the city in less than an hour. Or lift some weights.
Here's another video about fixie people: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kAO4EVMlpwM |

| Also, if you are going to ride a fixie. A BMX fixie is the way to go, much easier to do cool tricks and stuff. |

Bikes are no fun, give me one of these:

I used to ride one everywhere until I got to Korea and the only thing I could find was a cheap Chinese piece of junk that I wrecked in a couple months. |
