My very very very favoritest heavy metal band - Opeth - are playing in my home city on the 9th of October. The bad news is....that's the day I arrive home. My plane lands in the evening, just as Opeth are wrapping up their set.

You like Opeth? Check out early Katatonia (the vocalist from Opeth sang on their second album, Brave Murder Days), Candlemass, Solitude Aeturnus, Cathedral, My Dying Bride, Anathema, Amorphis, early Tiamat, later Therion - there are a ton of really great metal bands out there, spread the word I say.

PS - Are you fat? I have an x-tra large unworn Opeth t-shirt that I am willing to trade, looking for tape demos only though, or old 7"s from the second wave of black metal (will add more to the trade of course) - let a goat know!

Meh...typical rehashed pentatonic riffs. They sucked and always will suck.

For good American thrash, download the Morbid Scream demos, listen to Dark Angel and worship the first album of Sadus.

I've literally - in the last week - only just discovered Tiamat (Wildhoney specifically). It's a great, great prog-metal record. It has some curiously cheesy-sounding keyboards at the beginning of Gaia, but I'm picky.

Amorphis' Tales from a Thousand Lakes and Candlemass' Nightfall have made it on to my MP3 player in times past.

Saw a band called Sabbaton over the weekend. Based on their performance and crowd reaction they will be the next big metal band.

Aren't they power metal? Power metal never works, unless you are Iced Earth, and even then it is fail.

Again, Windir, 1184. Awesome black metal album with good melodies, and the techno part on the last song is ftw. Great album.

He W/Horns,
I've struggled to get into other metal (WINDIR, etc. etc.) with just a quick listen because of the singers and seemingly lack of originalty/variety in musical sound. This is snap judgement disqualification. I can only take on one new one here and there. It is hard to move beyond Napalm, Morbid Angel, Diecide with new versions of the sameish sounding. I got into Lamb of God years back and find them amazing and the vocal delivery good (a lot of people hate his singing). This post has fired me up though because I thought nothing new would tantalize my ears... until Skeletonwitch. We have a winner. Their frontman is badass, I like it with the music. Melodic, thrashy, evil. Keep posting band names for me and I may youtube myself into digging all sorts of stuff I would not have explored on my own.

Not really, I have been listening to metal since I was 12, I am 31 years old now. When I recommend something, it IS good. Recommendation for today? The new Candlemass album. Or early Septic Flesch/Septicflesh.

I win this thread.

Well. I've been listening to metal since 1981 and am 39 now. So, as the youngsters say it... Epic Fail!

As for recommendations. Yes the new Candlemass is quite good. But for even older stuff check out Angel Witch, Dark Star, Riot, Raven (up to Live at the Inferno), Crimson Glory, Torch, Trance, Cirith Ungol etc.

Megadeth sure has been popular though, for a long time. Maybe it's the mad guitar skills.
