I can't believe no one has mentioned Elvis yet. Even if he didn't write any of his music or have a permanent band, he's undeniably (nearly) as influential on modern popular music.

I'll throw my lot in with The Velvet Underground for their continued and ever-expanding influence. They covered a lot of ground on 4 albums and are regularly cited as inventors/godfathers/forerunners/pioneers of a host of pop/rock genres and subgenres. They have been influential in as many ways as The Beatles, but on a much much smaller scale.

Elvis was hugely influential and almost single-handedly caused the British beat group boom in the 60's. The amount of famous musicians who went on to become 60's and 70's legends who say that it was Elvis made them go out and buy a guitar is amazing.

But, the man was just a singer. He couldn't write a song or play an instrument. He was an icon more than a musician.

Influential? Very much. But more in a social sense. The teen rebel image.
