Brits are world-renowned for being stuck-up twits in the same way germans don't shave body hair. Its a long-running joke, nothing more. |

My post is somewhat toungue in cheek.
Leonard Cohen and Neil young are two of the best singer songwriters of their century.
But apart from Atom Egoyan - whom I think is vastly overated and most of his plaudits rest apon his one trick pony conceit of taking a story and rendering it obtuse by presenting it in an affected non linear manner - I honestly have never heard of any Canadian talents in
painting
literature
theatre
film etc....
So the guy might have a point...
I like Jim carey.

I know you said your post was tongue in cheek, but I responded anyway because a lot of people assume that Canadians aren't that talented, and we are often overshadowed by the US. I think, though, considering our HUGE population difference (over 300 million people in the US, compared to just under 34 million in Canada) that we Canucks are doing okay!

Sadly its too late for us to reclaim James Doohan. He worked in radio, as did Lorne Greene, before working in TV.
The problem isn't marketing so much as it is the market itself. The industry doesn't believe the American public wants to know where anyone is from. Or they believe that Americans are insular in nature (I don't fully believe this) and prefer to hear that "________" is American. So while artists may not hide it, they don't advertise the fact. Some people play along in order to have successful careers.
It is presumptuous, condescending and just plain silly to assume that one's audience will only respect art from one's own country. As if art is only understood from one perspective.
We claim Michael Ondaatje, and I happily do too, but he is originally from Sri Lanka.
You may also keep Paul Schaeffer, but I won't insist.
For artists, although this is not my specialty, there are the Group of Seven (don't ask me to name them!) and Robert Bateman. You could also add Native artists Roy Henry Vickers and Bill Reid. |

Well, I'd say Cronenberg is a pretty talented filmmaker, and is genrally recognized as such internationally.
But I agree with you about Egoyan. In Exotica, for example, there is no reason for the subplot about the guy auditing the pet store, except that it makes the story seem more complex(and hence supposedly more profound) than it really is. |

Well, the saddest thing is that when anyone does become "moderately" good at something, they usually leave and go to the US. Money talks, baby.
By the way, did you know how much good music comes out of Winnipeg? Incredible! The music scene there must be amazing!
examples - Neil Young, Billy Talent, Propaghandi, The Weakerthans, The Guess Who, Crash Test Dummies, ect.
Incidentally, Calgary does not really produce too many high profile musical talents. Besides Chixdiggit!  But Calgary does produce many high profile accountants. |

You gotta admit, it's kind of weird that all of these really high profile musicians came from Winnipeg. That list is more impressive than anything Vancouver or Calgary could produce, for example. |
