Whistler/Blackcomb BC. I heard that a few people might be going there in February.

Gepik teachers aren't "allowed" to travel out of the country?

Weird! So if they ask, I've been hitting the tanning bed?

I'm thinking of going somewhere cheap and hot for my break. Where in SE Asia's good for a single gal?

Thailand, Laos, Indonesia, Angkor Wat, & central Vietnam are all good. I wanted to go to the Philippines (Boracay, El Nido, Puerto Gallero), as I've never been there. Avoid Pattaya in Thailand, & Patong Beach in Phuket, & I wasn't fussed on Ho Chi Minh City either.

really depends on what you want to do, doesn't it?

lying on a beach, Boracay is pretty nice, but way more developed than it was a few years ago. Thailand like Phuket Karon beach is way less sex driven, and so not bad. Cambodia is pretty great and definite;y cheap.

You really need to be specific as to what you're looking to do.

As for gepik not being able to leave the country, unless they have formally changed the visa regulation and that is in print somewhere, to not allow you to leave the country is a major breach of international law...

Lying on a beach is good, but can be boring for 2 weeks, alone.. even if I go somewhere "sex driven". Can anyone recommend a great 2 week safe tour? A "lifetime experience"? PM me or post here..

You have to think of where is the weather nice, and what is your budget.

India can be pretty life changing if you've never been there before, or it can be a living nightmare too.

SE Asia is OK but outside of the main cities, it can be very chilled, maybe too chilled. If you're not into temples, beaches and hill tribe trekking, where in many cases you feel like a lamb to the slaughter as out come the trinkets and hand crafts, it might be best missed.

Way over generalization I admit, but that sums up SE Asia for me, even though I loved Vietnam, which I think was more due to the fact a have a friend over there who speaks the language, that was great.

For a slightly jaded traveler like me, I loved Nepal. It's actually not that cold in Kathmandu and Pokhara is warmer still. Tourist numbers are down in winter, the mountains look superb, and I'd be there myself this winter but I have to things to do back home. It is very cold in the mountains but having a cup of chai surrounded by huge mountains is worth a bit of cold.

Anyone interested in doing Melbourne (AU) and Christchurch (NZ) with me? I'd love to do a roadtrip, but need some company. And someone who can drive on the leftside of the road. Smile

Kurtz, I'm with ya 100%.

Nepal is great. I was there 2 winter breaks ago to do the Annapurna Base Camp trek, and now i'm going back there this winter to do Gokyo Lakes/Everest Base Camp and then attempt to Summit a peak called Island Peak. It should be pretty awesome!

But yeah, Nepal is a really chill country, pretty tame as long as you don't get caught up in the protests that happen there every once in while, and it's even better if you hang out in Pokhara (which is smaller, and better organized than Kathmandu).

Philippines. I haven't been to too many places in Asia, but it's my favorite place so far. I went to Thailand, Japan, China and of course Korea.

It's an odd mix of cultures with great, balmy winter weather. The people are great, and even if you don't like beaches, the jungles are amazing as is Manila.

Is Thailand one of those must see places? I think I'm going to go there, last 2 weeks of January. Anybody else going around that time? Any must see/do's? (Just kidding... about the "any must see/do's"... I'll go buy the Lonely Planet).
