I abhor soju.

It's a chemical swill (basically ethanol diluted with water) that companies produce for pennies a bottle. It tastes horrible, and leaves your body devastated the next day.

I understand that people drink it both out of nostalgia for poorer times, but things are that tough anymore, so there's no need to continue drinking toilet bowl cleaner. Soju companies -- like Korean beer companies -- really need to step it up and create a quality product for a growing demographic of customers with more discerning tastes.

Andong soju is damn good. The stuff I drink is 5000won a bottle. It's hard to find though. The only place near me is a duck place but I would happily drink it instead of jinro fresh, if they stocked it in mt local mom and pop store.

i don't mind soju. anyone that has ever lived in china and grown accustomed to drinking baijiu will side with me that it isn't that bad. prideofidaho and i are mirror images, when i am whiskey drunk i get out control, and its not unheard of for me to be offensive either...

This depends on what you're looking for. If you want something to sip on while you relax, go with a good whiskey. If you are looking to have a good night out with friends maybe 1/month, go with a good whiskey. If you just need one shot to loosen up after a long day, go with a good whiskey.

If you are pairing with Korean food, drinking for the sake of drinking, or you don't want to taste your alcohol at all, soju is fine.
Cheap whiskey is fine for mixing as well. A bottle of Tesco is 12,000 won which is crazy cheap but goo enough if you aren't sipping.

It's very possible (and, I assure you, easy) to enjoy both. It's like knowing when to pair an American amber or a French red.

1. Can you enjoy both whiskey and soju?

Yes. Try not to taste the soju. I have bottles of nice scotch and bourbon in my pantry but rarely hit them, when out, the bottles are small and green. Just take each for what it's worth. And don't mix them. A glass of soju before or after whiskey just kills the flavor and night.

2. Prices, etc:

Two good links to consider:

1. The price of soju is actually artificially inflated! http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/biz/2009/11/123_55744.html

2. Everything else is expensive because of taxes...

Soju is tolerable if in a tumbler filled and kept full to the rim with ice. If it were export soju or shochu it would be a good drink.

My local gangsters can't figure out why I laugh at them when they take a 17-year-old scotch and 'foam it up' with a 'K pour' of Hite. Laughing "Bravo boys!"

This topic seems like comparing Astin Martin to Kia. Personally I find a decent bottle of soju will beat Red Label.

So... you'd rather drive a Kia?

Well, after a period of "Uh, NO MA'AM" (National Organization of Michiganders Against Alcoholic Mis-distilling) towards Soju, lately I've developed a taste for it. It IS cheap. And it is nice to be able to do shots of Soju as fast as you can pull the trigger. It's got a nice social vibe to it, plus the buzz is good for sentimentalism. Whether shots, or as part of some fruity concoction at a club in Gangnam, or going solo, straight from the gourd on a bottle, it certainly has its moments.

That being said, Whiskey is still King. Whether it be I)Bourbon A)Scotch or 1) Irish. Whether served straight from the bottle (wipe the mouth of the bottle with your sleeve before you drink it and you will get thrown out of the car) neat (Irish) or on the rocks (Scotch) or cut with some water (Whiskey & Water- A Gentleman's Drink). Whiskey just can't be beat.

A cheap fifth of some Dirty Bird or Ten High wont run you more than about 8-9 bucks. Course they can end up costing more (court costs)

I miss cheap whiskey. And Malt Liquor.
