Yeah, tell that to all those Ethiopian kids. |
We try to feed the world. We give far more than enough. During the Ethiopian famine, there were warehouses full of grain that ended up rotting. African governments are so incompetent that they can't perform even the most elementary of tasks. It has nothing to do with the big bad US and food waste. Africa should be able to feed herself. Speaking of, whatever happened to the breadbasket in Zimbabwe? |

It really is pretty much time to just let Africa sink or swim. I have a lot of compassion for people unlucky enough to be born there, and I want to help them, but food and financial aid doesn't seem to be doing that. Food is not difficult to create, and the conditions exist for sufficient food production in these countries. |

ALL of Africa should sink or swim? THE WHOLE CONTINENT?
That's a bit harsh, don't you think?
Some African nations, the ones that refuse to settle down and warring amongst their own peoples, they may need a little tough love, that's true. But many of them have moved away from the sort of lawlessness that leads to having supply trucks blown up and children starving to death as they wait for relief that never arrives. When they do this, we cannot stand by. We must feed and educate the children. Only when we do this, will they ever rise up out of poverty, and when we don't do this, we get things like 911.
(Thomas Friedman talks about these things a lot and I'm a fan) |

No, I don't. An entire continent is more than enough landmass for self-sufficiency. If you've literally got an entire continent of people who can't survive without external aid, something is wrong.

They'll rise up out of poverty when they create a working economy of their own. That's not something you can be handed. We've been trying to do things as you describe, and it really hasn't worked from what I can see. These people need to form effective governments of their own; everything else will follow from that. |

Not only will this help improve peoples' health and provide more energy in the form of biofuel, it will also improve the average gas mileage. Flight prices could also come down for similar reasons. After all, it takes less energy to transport people who weigh less. |

| I'm pretty freaking sure if AMERICA tosses 40% of its food, Korea tosses 80% no lie. All those side dishes in the trash, all the kids and co-workers who don't finish school lunch... |

I know I toss a fair bit of food. Food goes bad. I throw it out. When I cook, I usually make enough for a meal and don't usually have leftovers. If I buy produce, bread, meat or any other perishables, though, it's quite difficult to buy the exactly right amount of each one. I don't recall ever being able to buy 3/4 of an onion. I love onions, but I'm not going to eat one as a meal just to conserve food.
And then there's the crappy zen question "Why do hot dogs come in packages of ten while buns come in packages of eight?" I've also never found a good cereal to milk ratio when buying. If I buy enough milk to cover the whole box of cereal, the milk will go bad by the time I finish it.
If you hippies want to hold on to your rotting perishables and make a mini organic farm on your balconies, go for it. I however, will let the 400 won go to waste and dump it. |

What do you expect us to do - put all our leftovers in a box and mail it to Africa?

My fifth grade teacher used this logic when we talked about food. "Should I put that half eaten BigMac into a box and ship it to Africa with your leftover fries?" I loved that guy. |

It is absolutely wonderful that Americans can waste so much food. Isn't it a sign of the fabulous success of the American experiment?
We are all contributing to this thread just after Thanksgiving and just before Christmas. These are the holidays of the producers. Those of us who make a contribution to the community. We are teachers.
Let's give us all a toast with the very best of wine or soju or baiju or whatever we are drinking. Let's all give a toast to the very best, the very finest civilization that the world has ever seen. |

Nah, let's give a toast to those starving Africans and their wonderful systems, systems that don't ensure domestic tranquility, systems that don't allow them to build dams and levys and canals, systems that don't ensure their property rights, systems that rob and rape them of the fruits of their labor. Let's give a toast to child soldiers who steal the West's gifts of food for their corrupt masters (with a little thrown in for themselves, of course). How about a toast to the countries that develop nuclear weapons instead of sustainable farming practices? A rowdy three cheers for those wonderful despots who know how to run the lives of their subjects better than the subjects themselves! Maybe a... a eff it, if you don't get the picture by now... |
