I think Moon originally intended to market his church to the Korean nationalist crowd, so he was probably just playing to the room with that little number. |

Actually, the most conservative Christians these days are to be found in the third world and recently developed nations. Makes sense from a marxist perspective, i guess, because when western nations were at roughly the same level of economic development their religions were pretty much like what you see in Korea today.
This really irks western liberal Christians. They love to go on about their solidarity with the third world, imagining that these countries are all bastions of enlightened tolerance. Of course, their little liberal hearts are so sadly broken when they actually meet some of these noble savages and find that, on issues like homosexuality and abortion at least, they are as reactionary as any Missisippi cracker.
There was an hilarious incident a few years back when the issue of gay ordination came up at some sort of international protestant conference(Anglican Communion? World Council of Churches?) A pro-gay motion was voted down, largely by the third world delgates. John Spong, a very liberal Episcopalian bishop from the states and a big supporter of gay ordination, explained the results by saying that third world Christians have gone from "practicing animism to practicing a very primitive form of christianity". Needless to say, this was not very useful in the building of cross-cultural solidarity. |

| There are also what look like Mormons wandering about - usually in pairs. You can spot 'em a mile away as they are almost always fair-haired, blue-eyed, thin 20 something men, clean cut wearing the same black and white suits. If they had shades, they could be mistaken for the blues Brothers younger Bros. Harlmess enough though, I think. They have never made the slightest attempt to hassle me - they must be after some other type ... |
