Before he became a full-blown alcoholic, probably. He's slurring his words on some of his later recordings. |

I personally think Jim Morrison was one of the best, but it wasn't just for the voice, it was the whole stage show thing.
It is an odd statement because the Beatles are bigger than Jesus but John Lennon is an amazing singer.
I'd throw Paul Rodgers and Freddie Mercury out there, too. |

Another ridiculously great and often forgotten blues/rock voice is David Clayton Thomas, formerly the lead vocalist for Blood Sweat and Tears. That is one Canadian chap with soul a 'plenty. He still performs today I believe. Check out this classic bit of tape from the mid 70s. Tell me this guy couldn't sing??? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vu7XWgczC7o |

No question Jim Morrison had an amazing set of baritone pipes. His antics and lifestyle often overshadowed his art however.
I never liked Dylan or The Beatles for that matter.Lou Reed also has a unique and interesting voice.Neil Young as well. |

An absolute classic example of nutty 50's musicians meeting nutty 60's musicians...

LOVE his voice! I saw him at the Toronto Jazz Festival in...2002? I think? Anyway, after his set, I ran up to my hotel room to pee (port-a-loos don't appeal to me and we were super close to the hotel) and in the elevator on the way back down, I got out and he was getting in! I told him I had just watched his set and how great it was, and he asked where I was from and I told him, and he laughed and said "Wow, you're REALLY Canadian!"
It was a nice little interlude.
I also love Springtseen, Daltrey and Townsend, Plant, and Freddie Mercury will never be equaled ever again.
One man who I think is often overshadowed, but is a brilliant songwriter with a marvelous voice, was Warren Zevon. I actually cried when he passed away in 2003, of throat cancer of all the sad ironies. |

Cool story! Did he seem like a nice guy during your brief meeting? He has a rep as an arrogant, difficult person but.....the man can sing!!

Most people know his voice from this hit from 1969........

Thanks for that. Not a good example of his SINGING though, Lennon hogging the mike.
Here is the greatest singing performance by any rock and roll guitar-playing original artist I've ever heard.
Chuck Berry's Johnny B. Goode:

And he makes it more earthy here:

He killed it. Over half a century ago. Still fantastic.

| D-man- He was polite, affable, and not at all annoyed to have a giddy girl gush a tiny bit when she saw him. We spoke for probably less than two minutes, but he seemed quite nice. |
