In what segment? I didn't see any segment being mentioned. This post reeks of self-adulation!

I was the male voice actor for a series of radio skits on Arirang Radio entitled "Korean 'It' Words." One of the episodes covered this term. Way to jump to conclusions:p

It's the latest "it" word apparently describing Korean girls, but I can't find the meaning.

Hey! I'm actually the male voice in that segment, and the way it was described to me was that it's more of a girl who blows all of her money on clothes/accessories/hair/makeup and so she's forced to eat dwenjang-chiige all month to make up for it.

These other articles however seem pretty in-depth!

Thanks for listening:D

I always thought of it as golddiggers who wouldn't touch the stuff because they just want the finest European/Western foods to go along with their Italian designer handbags.

"Nyuh" or 녀 is a colloquial and often impolite word (when used directly) for a female. The "dwenjang" in this case has no real contextual inference. Someone just made it up. It's possible to say "Dwenjang Nam" for males as well.

For a male, the term is 고추장놈 (Go Chu Jang Nom)

This expression is at least 3 years old as I remember my students excitedly explaining the concept to me during a conversation class. They way they explained it to me was that they lived at home, but spent what little money they had putting on airs by hanging out in Starbucks sipping on the same drip coffee all day, carrying Chanel shopping bags, etc. They'd always be trying to get their boyfriends to buy them fancy imported crap as well. Since they can't actually buy anything decent, they're still eating Korean food at (their parents') home because they can't afford to go out for TGI Fridays.

As one of my students put it, they keep trying to look like Chanel, but they still smell like dwenjang.

I knew it! She is trying to make me into her boyfriend! Damn it! No more favors for anyone! Laughing
