I just bought a pair of navy Dockers the other day. I've worn one pair for nine years at work or running around.

"Nice Pants"
"Excuse me, are those Dockers you're wearing?"

Those are the kinds of remarks I'd get from people.

I think its harmless. This is just an attempt by some marketing people to launch a "revisionary" campaign to revitalize their marketshare. No big deal. It's not exactly going to set women back in any way or change gender relations. It's a commercial, for trousers, that no one at all cares about except for people who have a vested, economic interest in finding/inventing things to care about (such as the media).

I think it's kind of amusing. At the same time, I am a strong adherent to masculinity for men. It's good to be strong (emotionally, morally), it's good to be in control (of yourself, your affects, your family). The concept of "wearing the pants," however, is so absurdly dated and practically forgotten that it's hard to take it seriously, as a slight against female determinism or a "call to arms" for sex-insecure men. It's just silly.

Oh, harmless for sure. Advertizement isn't revolution, it's a reflection of what people want Or what people want you to want). Or, something they'll remember. Remember the FCUK brand- I do, and I have no idea what it was for, just that it got everyone's jockies in a knot. Might be a reflection of the current attitude, though.

This campaign makes a lot of sense when you consider who needs to wear khakis: cubicle drones, entry-level office positions, 24-34 set maybe.

They aren't engaged in physical labor and may be physically meek compared to those that do. They lack physical power. However, they aren't wearing suits to work yet so I'm betting their paycheck isn't all too impressive. Thus they lack the power associated with great wealth. This ad takes something they have to do anyway and makes it MANLY.

Okay, so this ad won't REALLY empower them and no one is going to take it that seriously and make this consideration when purchasing their ugly work pants. But it's funny.

Also, I don't know what nonfat lattes and salad bars have to do with gay men. Seems Bernard is stereotyping a bit in an effort to try to substantiate her argument.
