If the license of Spidey is anything like the X-men franchise then they have x amount of years to make another film. If the studio doesn't make a film within that time period the license then reverts back to Marvel/Disney.
Iron-man wasn't optioned to a different studio so Marvel has full control of the directions of the film, which is why it was so good.
From the sounds of it Sony (who had a huge legal battle with another studio to get Spiderman's first movie license to begin with) plans to reboot the series within a few years (2012? 2013?) and I suspect that it will be a trilogy (at least) which means that Marvel/Disney won't have Spidey back anytime soon. Since Spidey is pure gold in the theater it would be a hefty sum to get wrangle it back from Sony.
I have quite a bit of money invested in Marvel stock and wouldn't mind if the stock dropped a bit if it meant Spidey came home. I would make it up in the end anyway. |
