There was a public holiday during the World Cup for some sort of governmental elections - I think it was Thursday 13th June, 2002, the day of the Brazil v Costa Rica game.
It saved me from taking one of my holiday days to get to the game Smile

A public holiday is a public holiday. The government didn't decree, "Public holiday for everyone, BUT OF COURSE NOT THE WAEGUKS!!" That's like saying only the Christians can have Christmas off.

Maybe, but.

I really don't know if it will apply to Hagwons. They still have to get their 20 days of class in the month. If April 15th is a holiday, you can bet that the another holiday that month will disappear.

The schools should have anticipated this. As this is a leap year, there is an extra day, so there should be a place they can add a holiday.

Doubtful. Two things:

Hogwon anticipation is a bit of an oxymoron don't you think?

and

Seolnal was a day longer this year, meaning that the schools probably used that extra day in February already.

Well, I know of at least one hagwon chain that does have it as an extra day on the calendar, but you are probably right about the small schools.

Why? It not the teacher's fault that the government made that day a public holiday. If hogwon owners have an issue with that decision, they should talk to the government about it.

Ugh... it's so easy to figure out.

Most hogwons have to have 20 teaching days in the month; Public Holidays or not. I can't speak for kiddy hagwon's, but Adult Hagwons must teach 20 classes a month. There will be 20 days of school at those hagwon no matter what happens.

And who really cares, whose fault it is. The hagwon is a company. They will do what is in their best interests. When the World Cup ended, the government urged all companies to give their workers the day off. Our school wouldn't b/c of the 20 day policy.

Because many holidays are on Saturday this year, there are more than 240 (12x20) teaching days this year.

FUBAR - you're saying, at your school, when a month with a public holiday comes around (Tree Day, Christmas, Children's Day), they make you make it up to keep the 20 days? In other words, you DON'T get all public holidays off?

Some schools just have "make-up" classes on Saturdays.

Not FUBAR, but that' s standard operating procedure for adult hagwons. On the up side, on months with more than 20 days, we get those extras off.

Exactly.

But I was also saying that Hogwon workers might get the day off, but they will have to make it up somewhere. IF the school will be short of their 20 teaching days in the month.

Yes, but it will probably be on a Saturday, not a national holiday.
