If worse comes to comes worse, have a tuk-tuk driver take you around an area till you find something that suits your taste. They usually are "associated" with a hotel, that they always try to bring customers to, but both times I've looked for a place to stay in PP, we ended up driving around for a bit till we found a place.
Oh, and don't be afraid to ask to see the room first if the place looks sketchy.
