Watch out for the Athlete's Foot and foot fungus. Almost guaranteed if you go often enough. I don't know if you can wear plastic sandals inside, but it might be worth a try.

I always bring my sandals when I go to those places. Athlete's foot in Korea is much more potent and dangerous than back home. Got it once, almost took my foot off. Been very careful to clean between my toes and dry my feet off completely ever since then.

Damn right you are!

I hate those dirty water places!

the one by Oncheonjang has the nice sleepy room in it with pillows, cushions, and blankets. Spaland though is nice because it bars any rugrats under 13 from entering. Or at least that is what the sign says. Other nice options are the Aqua Palace on Gwangally beach. It costs about 6000 and has a wicked view of the beach and the bridge from the hot tubs. Vesta in Haeundae I am told also has a killer view.

The amount of foreigners who are scared of this just goes to show how anal we are about showing off our nude selves. I guess I could be included in this; however, due to drunkenness during my first year in Korea, I ended up going. I kind of felt weirded out gong with other foreigners, but I think in the end it brought us closer that we were all weirded out together.

I don't usually go regularly as it is a pain in the butt and sort of boring. In the winter my pipes used to freeze and I would have to go for about a week in February or January. No problems. That early in the morning no one is staring. When I joined a gym about 5yrs ago they had a sauna in the same building and a good deal on a price for both. I tried that for 3 months. In the summer it was awesome as I would go into the cold water a lot to cool down.

If you are a guy, who cares if they stare? Go when the kids aren't there and you shouldn't have a problem. For the woman, I hear the adjumas like to grab your boobs...good luck with that.

I love them although I am afraid to go again.
I had a scratch on my face and whilst bathing I felt it sting. I thought nothing of it but 2 days later I got pretty bad Impetigo on my face. What a nightmare. Took over a week to go.
I'm nearly sure it was the baths. I know it sounds obvious not to go with cuts etc but I was stressed and wanted to relax and figured it was practically healed. . It's not worth it!!

Most of the negative comments are lies or these people have seriously weak immune systems. I have been at least 100 times to over 30 different locations, never had a problem. Friends with many people who have been hundreds of times too, never heard of a problem. The people with negative comments sound like the church from medieval times and their stance against baths. You people disgust me, public saunas are fine. Take a shower.

Filthy places. Who wants to walk around in pajamas that hundreds of other people have been sweating in? Do you like showering with soap that has the pubes of five other people on it?

Saunas are a breeding ground for bacteria and disease.

Grab the Chickens Levi (now banned) told me that one evening he made the mistake of trying to get some sleep in the Itaewon jimjilbang.

According to him he woke up just in time as Stiffy Nightcrawler was sliding his way over to his exposed posterior.

There are 2 notable saunas in Itaewon.

The Hamilton Hotel sauna is quite good, except for the mysterious pool containing green water, that I have never been able to figure out.

The sleeping area is quite gay with a fair amount of gay sex going on, especially after midnight. Although it is not as gay as the explicitly gay Hyundai Sauna across on the other side of the street and up the hill slightly to the left.

There used to previously be another good ground floor sauna behind behind Geckos down the hill a little on the right-hand side, but they have turned it into a resturant so that is history now.

I guess in terms of sauna traffic, there is always a lull at around 5pm-7pm when they empty out: the old ajosshis have finished for the day, but the twinks haven't arrived.

lol... thats one observation right there.
the Hamilton one is not gay if you only took the sauna and then go to the coed jimjibang with big tv and a bar.... there are also sporty and normal massages room for woman and men served by a woman, with computer and internet...
All you need to do is to dry yourself, wear the clothes, walk backwards the way you get in, and turn right( you turn left to go to the sauna part) and enjoy the service, there are also comic books and hot sleeping room( 73C ) besides cold sleeping rooms (7C with ice)
Totally satisfied, everyone dishes this sauna because all they think of is the gay part... shit smelt minded people.

I used to go to Itaewonland and on the women's side, the tubs feature these fountains that are very large replicas of male genitalia and I always wondered if this was also true of the men's side, or if perhaps the guys were looking at large replicas of female pudenda. Does anyone want to answer this question? (I hope that it doesn't violate TOS.)

I went to itaewon land and the men side seems doesnt have vavavuum resembles... sorry.

Itaewonland is about 5000 won, isn't it? It's less that 10,000 won.

Does anybody know some good jimjilbangs around the Ilsan Lake Park/ La Festa area? For some reason, I'm really shy about going into strange jimjilbangs for the first time. I need somebody to reccomend one, or to take me to one.

itaewonland is 8000 won for dead night.
and 5000 for daytime.

Well that means you are not going but not that ALL these places are as you describe.

The better places are clean, well maintained and pleasant. Of course, the smaller, older neighborhood bath houses are sometimes dirty.

You need to be able to differenciate between a SPA and a local BATH HOUSE....

For example, in Busan, Spa land in the Shinshegea department store is sparkling clean. They clean the jimjilbang 3 times per day, the baths are cleaned every day....but if you are unconfortable with going to such places thats your perogative. Crapping on the places are bad however is dumb and ignorant.
