I find it ironic how many white people post on a thread about issues of race and color. There has been one person that responded that has first hand experience.

Why do white people always give advice and comments about how people of color are treated in Korea?

Perhaps JamelToe doesn't mind being called a Brother from a white guy, but I still think that it is a little ignorant in this day and age to refer to black people as bros.

Ok I just had to post here....usually I am in the buy/trade tech forums. I worked in Seoul back in 2000, and in Ulsan in 2001. Both for 1 year contracts. I know it can be done. Back then it took longer, I have a thick skin so comments like "sorry we don't hire black teachers" didn't offend me. It was more frustrating. Actually I am lucky I guess. The first time it took 2 weeks to find work in Seoul, Ulsan it was less than a week. Now I am in a smaller city and and have been here for a long time. I am in Gunsan now, small place but it is like home for my family. Just some information to help the OP. Oh and I have seen numerous teachers non-white working in Hakwons, Universities, and public schools. Times are changing people!

Plenty of black dudes work in Seoul, including myself.....although hagwons are more picky these days due to the economy.

PS jobs are not racist in hiring and hire all types from my experience(I work for them in Seoul).

I'm black...and a male, so I have SOME experience in this situation.

Andrewchon was not necessarily wrong....recruiters will try to push you out to more less desirable areas because it will be easier to place you there.

The more desirable schools know that they're in demand and they're pickier with who they want to hire. Sometimes they might want someone who's more "American looking" to teach at their school so people of color are pushed down the priority list.

It doesnt mean you wont get a job in Seoul. I know plenty of black people who teach in Seoul and in the nice areas just outside of Seoul.

It does mean you may have to work a little harder to get placed.

If it is Seoul that you want though (or Busan or wherever), make sure you stick to your guns and dont let a recruiter tell you "Sorry...the schools only want a white, american female...but you're so lucky we were able to place you in BFE because there want many positions this hiring period".

If a recruiter cant get you what you want...go to the next one.

Where on this thread did I say anything close to that?

I said that white people giving advice about being black in Korea is pretty ironic.

Besides, white is not a color. It is the absence of color.

Perhaps I should have said the members of the racial majority in their own country giving advice for the racial minority groups.

There were a number of African-Americans who attended my church in Seoul and most of them worked for SMOE. I would encourage you to apply there, it's a good job.

Depending on your education and experience, you may be eligible for any position, in or out of Seoul. Referals are the best solution to fast-track in Korea. PM me if you can.
