look, if you're homeless like you say,
suck it up
ask a friend to help you out. My friend stayed with me for 2 weeks before she could get her flight home. It was her, my dog and me in a closet of a studio. This is the time to find out who your real friends are. |

^Yeah, I'll be arriving back in Seoul within the next two weeks so I may have to come to the rescue - but since the wife and I won't be moving into our apartment until August when it's completed and I don't feel like staying with her parents upon my arrival (nice as they are), the rescue may involve me joining Ying Le on the park benches.
Oh well, at least he's good company. |

Seriously though, why does everyone love criticizing homeless people? I see the same thing in comments to online articles about various difficult situations. It's like people don't know how to leave it at "Wow, that sucks-- hope everything works out," anymore. Everything's gotta be a diagnosis of personal failings nowadays. If there's any karmic justice, some psych patient with delusions of persecution will find one of these victim critics and proceed with a baseball bat beat down while shouting how it's all the recipient of the beating's fault he's doing this. |

Ying, Just do the best that you can. Get some ban chan (inexpensive stuff) at the shijang and ask your friend if s/he will loan you enough to get a bag of rice. Work a week, then ask your boss for an advance. If all else fails, contact me and I'll help you get to your next payday. Take care. |

I hate that attitude, and I think you're right-- it is pretty prevalent among Americans (speaking as an American who's lived in a few different regions and spent time in every other part of the contiguous states). My theory's always been that people like to blame or outright punish victims because convincing yourself that bad things mostly happen to people who screw up makes the world seem more fair. It's a similar mentality to the self-defeating attitude, where people sabotage their relationships or performances (like on tests) so they can preserve their pride by subconsciously knowing that they didn't really fail because they failed on purpose and nobody rejected their best efforts. Giving victims the benefit of the doubt necessitates accepting that anyone, including yourself, could become the victim of circumstances. Thus, most people believe they're fundamentally different from the homeless, cancer patients, prisoners, etc., as did most of the members of those categories before they became members of those categories. |

| There is a good movie out on Dvd in China now called the "blind side" about a family that helped a poor student. Good movie maybe you guys should help Ying out and he might go on to become a professional athlete. |
