My suggestion is to buy a router and have it so the router does the dial up for you...then your computer connects tot he router and problem solved.

That is how I have handled having DSL. IMO DSL sucks. I prefer cable or a straight CAT5 100Mbit line going from the wall into my computer.

from a user standpoint cable and DSL are effectively the same. They both require a modem. What's on the other side of the modem is immaterial. They almost always both run CAT5 from the modem to the PC. The login process can be just as asinine for both cable and DSL. I've known cable and DSL companies who have both had MAC address cloning (which is what you normally do with a router) or ones that have both had logins that get saved on your computer or a router. That varies on a company to company basis regardless of whether they're providing cable, DSL or fiber.

I've had high speed since before it came out to the mainstream public and I've never had as many problems with cable modems as I have with DSL. I've never had a cable modem need me to dial in. ALL DSL I have had require this and it makes it a pain in the arse to use the internet if you are using a non-mainstream OS.

From the DSL modem it runs CAT5, same with the cable modem. The difference is the dialing in that your computer should have to do through the DSL modem. Routers on the other hand have a feature where you can have it dial for you, and this is what I was suggesting might be a solution.

If it was me, I'd cancel that internet and go with someone that offered cable or direct access 100mbit.

As I said, my last service in Canada was DSL. I never "dialed in". It was MAC address cloning, identical to the cable service in the city. It has been that way for years. The last time I had to pass credentials with DSL in Canada was about 10 years ago.

if they're still making people pass credentials in the US, they need to get with the times.
