The people with the real cajones are those who stay home, work the mortgage, drive the suv, pump out the kids. There really is something to that discipline.
Don't know how they do it.

My father tells me he's scared to go into Atlanta. What do you think? |
Living near Atlanta and having to venture into the city several times a week, I'd say your Dad's fairly smart. There some areas that I wouldn't go to even if I had an armed guard. Other parts are quite nifty, though. Just like any U.S. city really. If you know it well, you'll be fine.
As for the OP, I'm packing my bags and heading in a couple of months. My friends' reaction has generally been, "Cool. You'll enjoy that and do great. . . There's no way in hell I could do it". |

Exactly. No reason for them to go to Korea in the first place as the money in Korea is not good, the people/culture are pretty crappy, the country is boring, the food is mediocre. Easily 50 other better places to visit/live in than Korea. |

But could they have done it 11 years ago? That's the real question. |

| As concerns Korea or Japan or China or wherever "Where ever you are, there you are". As concerns Atlanta, it's Sharknado III ( Oh Hell No !!! _) |

Not then, not now, probably not ever. They think I left for another planet. Perhaps they are correct, but none who know me among the people I left behind have ever expressed any inclination to crawl into a space ship bound for adventures in the great unknown. They are perfectly content to remain in the same place near to where they were born and will likely die. |

Okay. I just figured that it was referring to 11 years ago since that's when the original question was posted. |

If you had asked this question 20-30 years ago, I may have said no.
Now, however? Come on. The path has been trodden so long by so many, and there is so much information that it really isn't that big of a deal to do a year or three over here any more. Most hit the ground running.
The expat scene in Seoul and other larger cities is massive, there is little difficulty finding many of the comforts of home in terms of food and supplies, and Koreans are much more internationally minded than they once were. |

No most people I know have no idea how I can live here.
They would freak out just visiting let alone living here. |

| A couple of my best friends from back home did do this and enjoyed it enough. None of them stayed as long as I have though. My immediate family barely ever gets out of my hometown and I'm quite sure some of them would just curl up and die if they tried to live here. |

That's merely the difference between could and would. Could they? Absolutely not a problem. Would they? That's another issue.
Over the years I've had friends and family visit. They loved it. The key is breaking down the old misconceptions about life here. Another buddy is visiting in a couple of months. He's been here before and is psyched for a visit.
I remember a big one page story in the Wall Street Journal about ESL teachers in China. They made it sound so exotic and exiting. Oooohhhh, they had to go to another Asian country to get a visa renewal. Yawn. |

I have a friend who would love living here. We used to go to Chinese and Vietnamese restaurants. We would go to bars with Chinese girls and chat them up.
But he could never stand working here. He would probably punch a sixth grader within a month. |

Yes, I think just about all of my friends could do it. The only friend who I don't think could do it is a guy who refuses to fly and doesn't eat spicy food or vegetables or seafood so...yeah.
Living and working in Korea is not nearly as hard or difficult as most people make it out to be. It continues to amaze me that people find it stressful...I mean c'mon now, it's a teaching gig and your school takes care of most of your bills.
Least stressful job I've ever had. |

| It varies school to school. At some places, students are rude, inattentive, disrespectful, and disinterested in learning English. That can be demoralizing. |
