If Michael Jackson could name one of his children "Blanket", she should be able to name her child Beowulf.

If for some freak reason I had a kid and it turns out to be a human boy, I'd name him Angus Rudolpho -----

It has a certain "umph" to it.

But seriously, I'm all for outside-the-box thinking and everything, but giving someone a weird name simply for the purpose of having their name be weird (thinly veiled as "original") is simply going to make the kid end up being -surprise surprise- a weird person.

Oh- don't get me wrong.
I would not give that kind of name to a child to make them seem unique. I would do it as some kind of vengeance or punishment- especially if I were to give birth (some people say I'm big enough to be pregnant with octoplets). So sometimes, after I stop twitching from stress, I think of names I would name these children.

This is the great advantage of having middle names. You can give your kid a weird first or middle name, and if it doesn't look like he'll grow into the weird name, you can just call him by the more common name (assuming you give him one fairly common name along with the odd one).

Instead of burdening an innocent child with your ridiculousness, why dont you just legally change your own name to Beowulf?

What's so weird or abusive about the name Beowulf? It's a charming name, and has two very natural sounding potential nicknames (Bey, and Wulf), and is well known enough that it will be recognized upon being seen rather than a person having to sound it out. "Hey Bey, what's up?" Sounds totally natural and reasonable.

This isn't like naming the kid Blanket or Lemonjello or something. No idea why people are being so critical.

actually it is.... theyre all things outside the norm to name a child...

reminds me of the woman who named their son Jean Luc, after the captain of the Enterprise..... if you have a star trek fetish, naming after the original captain seems a much safer bet in English speaking countries... Wink

So what? There's a huge difference between names which are abusive or ridiculously outside the norm (like Blanket), and names which are outside the norm, but still very reasonable real names (like Beowulf). Plenty of totally reasonable, acceptable names are "outside the norm" at any given time.

Naming someone something like Beowulf can go either way. They are bound to be teased in school to some degree simply because that is what kids do. Still, on the whole Bey may love the name and be thankful they were given something different.

It may also be the bane of their existence. Take a job search as an example. Most good jobs have so many applicants that the HR people look for any reason to eliminate people. Beowulf could be odd enough to turn off HR people who tend to be conservative in their hiring decisions. Then again it may get them a second look they wouldn't have gotten otherwise. There is no way to know.

The point is you don't set your child up to fail.

Now, having Beowulf as a middle name is fine. You can still call them that. It gives them a bit of interesting party conversation. They can use a more traditional first name to apply for jobs and such. If they hate it they can easily walk away from it.

It is one thing to try and pass on things you love to your kids. It is natural and wonderful as long as you don't force things on them they hate. A name is a big deal. Beowulf for a first name is too odd.
