| I've heard it has something to do with fishing rights, but no one on earth can give me a certain response other than it has always been Korea's. I once saw a woman cut part of her finger off in Jongro over it, so I suppose there is something really profound about the place. |

Yeah, a profound hatred of Japan. |

I wanna hear the story about the woman cutting off her finger, her reasons, and the aftereffects. |

But then Koreans will view the incident as a "national tragedy"; write songs and make movies about it while destitute lovers would try to sail out there to drown over the beloved submerged islands of Dokdo. |

They will just dump rocks to keep it built up. Those rocks give Korea mineral rights and a large fishing ground. Bonus they get to deny them to Japan. They already pump significant resources to bolster their claim. |

| In all fairness on the issue- many antique maps, even those drawn up by Japan and China, do place Dokdo under Korean sovereignty. |
Not so. Such maps mistakenly identify Jukdo or Usan-do ( a small island 2 km from Ulleung-do) as the modern-day "Dokdo".
Korean claims to the rocks are unconvincing, as are Japanese claims. The rocks have been mostly ignored or considered inconsequential by both countries through most of history.
Korea is mounting a national campaign to claim the rocks out of a sense of emotional resentment due to former Japanese colonisation. They are setting up exhibits and scale models of the islet in every airport and subway station, such is the extent of the neurosis. But fact is they have a weak case.
For a further and thorough historical investigation, I highly recommend looking here:

Who cares who found it first or mapped it first or licked it first.
Lets have Korea and Japan hug it out... or fight it out.
That is how territorial disputes are resolved.
Its value? Well Alaska at 1.9 cents an acre was derided as useless and Seward's Folly. Then they found some black oozy stuff. |
