I was using 'study' in the Korean sense. That is, study for hours at school, study for hours after school, study well into the night, take repeated and futile tests, beaten by parents and teachers for not getting good grades etc.
I suspect that many Korean parents in NZ are horrified that NZers (and the NZ education system) does not make children study fruitless hours just because their 'job' is a 'student'.
However, if these Korean parents took a long, hard look at the NZ education system, and NZ society, they would see that NZ produces very flexible, independent and educated people - people who make their mark all over the world .
I guess that's what these Korean parents are frightened of. Imagine not living at home with mummy and daddy until you're 30, and making your own decisions and way in life. Absolutely scandalous. |

^ Not sure what it's like in NZ, but I'd take Korea's system of forcing kids to study than Canada's system of too much freedom.
Of course there are trade offs, but at least it's pretty rare to hear of some Korean teen beating some random old grandma to death over a few wons. Korean kids tend to beat each other up. Canadian teens branch out and steal from, and attack, all age groups. |

lets see: they view American/Western culture as:
Disrespect for the elderly
Undisciplined youth
lack of a "garden"
Last time I looked around Korea, that was what I saw.
What place around here has a proper garden anyway? |

I think America has gotten too slackerish with its kids while Korea is overworked.
Kids shouldn't be in Hagwon till 11 but they shouldn't go home and loaf around from 3 either.
The Korean system ensures that everyone is at least average or better, but may prevent some from becoming exceptional. The American system allows kids to become exceptional but produces a lot of flotsam and jetsam along the way.
Also a kid being a workaholic nerd is not such the bad thing we make it out to be. |
