I really enjoyed "The Damned United." Michael Sheen was great, as was Timothy Spall.

One of my favorite directors is Mike Leigh, so I would suggest ANY of his films.

I just saw the Korean movie "This Charming Girl". Very very good, not quite great, but certainly worth a watch if you're into indie/artsy movies.

The funny thing about French movies on DVD in Korea is that quite a few of them have no English subtitles, like "The Eighth Day."

Thanks for the recommendations but keep them coming. I've seen quite a few movies that people have recommended. "Grave of the Fireflies" was so depressing but I've seen it quite a few times and it's finally gotten a DVD release in Korea.

This may be a little mainstream, but I did find and watch "The Downfall" (Untergang), after the little parody clips on YouTube made me curious. What a riveting, frightening movie about all hell breaking loose in the final days of Berlin in World War II. Some powerful, troubling scenes.

A recent must-see Argentinean flick: The Secret in Their Eyes.

Some classic masterpieces:
The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp
I Know Where I'm Going
A Matter of Life and Death
The Red Shoes
Late Spring
Early Summer
Tokyo Story
Floating Weeds
Sansho the Bailiff
Ugetsu
Preston Sturges' flicks from the 1940's
Solaris (the original Russian version from 1972)
Umberto D
The Earrings of Madame de...

That should keep you going for a while. Probably won't be able to download many of these though!

I don't know what you've seen, OP, but the 1960's-mid-70's were a golden age of cinema. Other than the obvious choices (Godfather, Chinatown, The Sting, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest) there are others you should see.

Robert Altman films in the 70's were great

MASH
McCabe and Mrs Miller
Nashville

Others worth watching that rarely seem to get mentioned-
Darling
Ipcress File
The Three Musketeers
The Fourth Musketeer
Serpico
Dog Day Afternoon
Little Big Man
Shampoo

Take a look at this and you'll want to see "Shampoo"
Carrie Fisher in Shampoo (1975)

Germany's "Good-Bye Lenin!" is a pure work of genius about the fall of the Berlin Wall. IMHO, it's the coolest comedy about the Cold War made within the past decade.

Yaya, a good start is to run through the winners at previous Cannes film festivals. A lot of good stuff there.

http://www.festival-cannes.com/en/archivesPage.html

Aside from that, I'd recommend:

"Black Cat, White Cat" - also check out more films by the same director if u like it. bizzare, comedic, rich visuals, great soundtracks, odd characters and fun stories are the theme here.

If you haven't seen "Night on Earth" check that out too, this is a fun movie too.

Finally, if you want a memorable thought provoking try "Stalker" by Andrei Tarkovsky. its a Sci-Fi/Philosophy type film.

You seem to have a love of Japanese films.

Some of my all-time favorite films are Japanese, especially the films of Yasajiro Ozu. They may be Japanese, but they're transcendent--absolutely first rate films. Plus, I lived in Japan for a few years and find their philosophical and poetic perspectives, the Japanese Floating World, a natural fit.

The main problem I have with Japanese films is their glacial pace. I remember that the U.S. release of "Shall We Dansu" was cut 20-30 minutes.
