I always wonder about why even having a career? I mean I know exactly what I'd go for and what I'm working towards, but There's so darn much to do out there, why just stick to one?
It's why I came here in the first place (one of several reasons). I want to be a Composer/Studio engineer, but I can work on that by saving up and gaining experience as I go about doing other things.
Maybe I'll never become the Composer, Maybe just for myself. There's a hundred thousand places to go and only 60 years to do it in. Easier said than done, of course. But would be nice to spend my life trying out as much as I can. |

There's so much to do out there, but if you have few skills and even less experience, you won't be doing very much more than working in TEFL for the rest of your life. Careers can go off at a tangent, and people do retrain to pursue alternative careers.....but you should invest in yourself and obtain skills and qualifications that will stand you in good stead when it comes to applying for the sort of jobs that you might be interested in. For instance, I'm definitely not going to be an accountant or a MD, so I won't invest in obtaining the sort of qualifications one needs for those jobs. However, I do want an international career and am fascinated with Russia and Central and Eastern Europe, I also want to spend a lot of my career in Europe, but would also consider (in the future) going back to Canada or even the US. Therefore I will endeavour to learn German, French, Russian, Spanish (and an E.European language such as Romanian), as well as obtain a general MA degree in Russian and Eastern European studies. This doesn't limit me to one career, however it does open up a heck of a lot of doors to a variety of different jobs (many of which I would be very interested in doing) and ultimately any one of them would be more satisfying than remaining in TEFL for the rest of my life.
Also I don't want to get to 40 and realise that I am experienced and qualified to do nothing other than work in TEFL or go back home and work in a call centre or shifting boxes around in a warehouse.....a very real risk if you don't bother to focus your resume / CV both academically and vocationally.
However, I'll reiterate my point that there is no age at which you are past it.....For my money, however, it pays to work out what will make you happy as early on in your life as you can. It takes time and lot of hard work to realise one's aspirations and I want to get to where I want to go in my life sooner rather than later. |
