Of course I don't think death threats are the proper reaction to a few posts on an English-language blog read by, like, two dozen people. But I also don't think people should be surprised that a blog designed to get a reaction, um, actually gets a reaction.

My blog, Brian in Jeollanam-do, has come up a few times when discussing this mess, but I really think I brought a lot more to the table than a site that spent each and every post tearing Korea down.

I know as well as anyone that Koreans can be sensitive to criticism, and that some among them try to dictate what foreigners should think and write about Korea. However, Koreans also are sensitive to threats against free speech, something you've probably noticed the last few years if you've been paying attention to local news and politics. Some people have come after me and my site, yes, but many other Koreans have defended me and, if not what I've written, at least defended my ability to write it.

The nutjobs who go after bloggers are no different than the nutjob bloggers who go after Koreans. I'm sorry to see blogs shut down by netizen bullies, but I'm not sorry to see Lousy Korea and a few other of those crappy blogs go away.

Well, my crappy blog is not going away. I moved it to http://www.youseok.proboards.com Also, what the Kimchi at http://www.whatthekimchi.blogspot.com did a fair and accurate portrayal.

And any way, it takes real courage to defend someone's right to say something, even if you disagree with that individual.

I agree a witty comeback is far more preferable, but if you're that fat kid who gets teased everyday, let's be real, the only course is to eventually sock the guy in the face. I wish people weren't like that, but that is the only way sometimes they learn.

There's a certain honour in hitting someone who repeatedly asks for it - healthier than letting these things fester - but suppose the fat kid threatens to kill the tormenter, or suppose he even snaps one day and carries out his threat? The first is pathetic, the second is psychotic and wildly disproportionate; and both are contemptible.

It sounds to me suspiciously like you're trying to justify death threats or even 'escalations' and put it all on the jerk who teases. Let's be real: jerks aren't as bad as pyschos.

I'm not justifying it. The guy who walks in to a house with the door wide open is the bad guy, but that doesn't mean the home owner isn't an idiot.

The point is if you're going to throw bombs, be prepared for some to come back and be able to handle it.

And Death Threaters should be sent over to NK for a lesson on free speech and what its there for.
