I think the kids at my hagwon have all been reassigned names or something, nothing out of the ordinary
Had a selection of superheros, animals and famous people when I taught in China though. Included two NBAs. |

Big Bear (he liked a story I told about a bear eating my sandwich when I was a little girl, camping with my family)
Medium Bear (his little brother REFUSED to be called small or little)
Taekwondo (she wears her belt at all times. Even over his wintercoat)
Superman (2nd grader. He tries to make me say aya when he high fives me)
Frankenstein
Michael Jackson
And one of my 5th grade classes last yeat had groups, and one of the girl groups named themselves Happy Ending. I had to explain later to the KT what that implied. The next week they were called Shiny Shiny.
My students call me:
Superman Teacher (they just can't remember Wonder Woman and I like to arm wrestle the boys)
Batman Teacher (Superman decided that when we high five, I'm Batman)
Fashion Show Teacher (after a winter of yoga pants and long sweaters, it's nice to wear pretty dresses again)
and one lucky girl gets to call me Onni, because she's my little sis. |

Yikes! Did you really have to explain that definition to the KT? It's a perfectly innocent phrase for children. Movies, books, hey, they often have happy endings--so do many fairy tales. You wouldn't happen to be the product of a hypersexual culture by any chance? Pathetic. |

Oh come on, you know KTs love learning dirty idioms. It was a bonding moment.
At least she's not like me. I would've kept silent for the daily tee hees... |

I'm no prude, Kaypea. I tell my KT's all kinds of salacious English tidbits, but it's the name change that signals something. Now these kids think "happy ending" is dirty or bad--at least obliquely. There is no need to rush them into our perverted, hypersexualized world. I'm a kids teacher for a reason. I actually get childhood. It's also not like the pejorative meaning of "happy ending" has eroded its ordinary sense. It's probably more like a traveler's dirty little secret that's not such a secret anymore. It's not like seemingly innocent sounding English words like "boner" and "cornhole." |

I knew how she'd react. I wouldn't just tell ANY coteacher. She lived abroad for some time. She thought it was really funny.
Any western male in a massage parlor knows what is meant if they are offered a happy ending. Get off your high horse. |

These kids don't think anything is out of the ordinary. We certainly didn't tell them the other meaning. She had all of the teams change their names. I'm not trying to teach the KIDS bad terms! Are you mad?! |

Took you a while to respond, eh? First, no high horse. Second, from your initial post, the situation sounded quite different. Very easy to see the situation from another light. Third, who said anything about teaching the kids bad terms. Fourth, relax. |

It took me a while to respond because I was out this morning.
1st: You called me pathetic.
2nd: Don't assume if you're going to insult.
3rd: You said they would think that there was something wrong with it, which would indirectly lead to their learning the bad term. I handled it professionally, and the KT and I giggled and I suggested that we change the team names as a whole.
4th: I'm extremely relaxed. You were the one getting huffy and calling names over a funny anecdote. You should take a nap. |

| Back in the day, I taught at a hakwon and one day a fully-grown woman entered my class. She said her name was the Elf of Shampoo. When I asked her why that was her name, she said it was the exact name of her last English teacher. She lasted a month and moved on. |

I stand by my words. You may not like them, but from your original post, it suggested immaturity and poor judgment. You can point fingers all day, but that would seem to confirm my original assessment. And if you were 16 years old, I'd say your post was kind of funny. Clarifying after the fact is your right, and that is the way forums work. However, exclamation marks and capital letters are, on the whole, pretty clear indicators of jacked up emotions.
Just as a point of curiosity: Wouldn't the kids wonder what's up with changing all the names? I realize Korean kids are on the whole unquestioning, but it just sounds like mountains out of molehills (like this exchange) for a Happy Ending.
Oh, and for the record. Are you sure that I was calling you pathetic or the situation? There is a big difference between completely smearing someone's character and calling someone out on an incident. |

I worked in the publishing industry, so used different fonts or capital letters to emphasize. If I had been angry, you'd have known. We're fairly limited when it comes to inflection on this forum unless we get into html, which isn't worth the time, in my opinion. Sometimes it's just faster to write in caps for a word than use the bold feature. It wasn't emotion, it was expression. If anything, I've found this to be amusing. I'm not fighting. I'm not riled up. I'm just curious as to why you seem to feel that my having told a 30-something female the other, less childlike meaning of the term "happy ending" is so horrendous. I didn't feel the need to give the entire timeline in my original post. Had I known you'd get your knickers in a twist, I'd have happily have given you a complete breakdown of the situation, but I didn't feel it necessary. The anecdote was meant to amuse.
I'm not pointing fingers. If anyone was, it was you pointing the finger.
I'm a near-30 female who adores kids. That doesn't mean that I can't find this hilarious. I never exposed the children to the meaning. I did, however, think it was funny and told my KT. She could have kept the name the sameI didn't care. Would I have giggled every day? You'd better believe it!

You're making a bigger deal out of this than the KT. It was a funny happening, she wanted to change the names, so the kids did. I hardly see how this negatively affected their precious young minds. We also let them design new signs, and once they gave me rough sketches of their logos, I designed them on illustrator, which we printed out and laminated. It turned into a fun activity. I also made them use descriptive words, rather than just names. Hercules team became Strongest, etc...

If you were talking about the situation, there was absolutely no reason for it. The situation was hardly pathetic. It was funny. Grow a sense of humor.
Ridiculous. (Now am I talking about you or your reaction?) |
