If you can avoid high hotel costs and supplement your diet with snacks you bring, then you can shoestring it.

Snacks aren't that expensive there. They have plenty of grocery stores and convienience stores to get snacks. Don't worry about that.

Hotels can be expensive, but a bit of research will help there. Really when people talk about how expensive Japan is, the main points are housing and transportation. Of course rent is expensive, and trains and taxis are more than here. And if you plan on going shopping there, it can add up quick (although department stores in Korea aren't exactly budget friendly.)

But if you just want to look around, eat some good (fantastic) food and have a nice time (excluding Disneyland), you don't have to spend a fortune. Once you get the ticket and hotel, you can shoesting it or splurge like anywhere else.

Stick to subway for traveling and you'd save a lot- though walking around in Tokyo mid-summer will be as humid if not more humid than Korea- and I found the Korean subway system to be in a better shape than the Tokyo ones, as the cars were usually newer, more climate control, spacious and with less people.

You can eat at restaurants for less than 1000 yen if you want to save and use the money for bars and clubs, since booze is more expensive.

Hostels are not bad options, as I usually found other people also interested in the boozing+clubbing thing, though you won't have that much privacy. With a group a hotel is probably better esp. if you can split the cost.

I also recommend a yakitori place called fuku- bit out of the way at Yoyogi-Uehara, and it took me half an hour to find it, but one of the best dining experiences I had in Tokyo. Yakitori is not cheap though, so eat something before hand and enjoy lots of skewered meat and good beer/shochu.

Might help if you can get hold of a LONELY PLANET Tokyo guide.

Eat:Stick to convenience stores(for bentos), and cheaper-looking izakaya & yakitori-ya.

Sleep:If you go for the hotel option, I'd avoid the big, Western-style hotels. Stay at "business hotels"(I don't have the means to type that in Japanese katakana). Prices vary-an average ball park figure for a single is Y6500. Have your passport at the ready and don't be totally shocked if the clerk says(probably in English)"Sorry, Japanese(people) only."

I was suggesting capsule hotels earlier - but if those don't work for you - I'd second this recommendation.

A very good website for finding hotels in advance is www.tripadvisor.com. Anything 3.5 star+ is OK. 4 star+ is great. The site tends toward upscale travelers it seems (in the hotel reviews at least), but one can just sort by lowest cost and see.

Business hotels tend to be...ahem..."male" in orientation but couples can certainly stay there. Bear in mind that tourists(so to speak)will generally be expected to pay in cash. Check in is generally not until 4 and check out is typically 10.

The odd time(I think this happened to me in Kyoto) you can save 1000/night by choosing the tatami-futon option over a Western bed.
