You'll be able to archive your emails and the ones your receive too. I'm not sure if this is a good idea or not, as I wonder if you'll be able to only search through *your own* emails, or be able to read someone else's. |
How would you be able to read somebody else's email? ** curious ** |

I read that about a week ago on cnn.
So I figure, hmm let's see how much hotmail charges.
They have different packages. But say US residents only. SO i flip my country setting from Korea to Canada. BINGO I can do it, but it is 10-20bux MORE per package. WTF is with that?
So I didn't do it. I got unlimited space on my own server (well limited, but as if I could use gigs of space on email) and figure FREE means just that.
2MB is crap. I am trying to ditch using hotmail. |

Having more space about being able to send bigger attachments doesn't mean you successfully send a big file UNLESS the other person has it too.
I don't need to store a lot of stuff in email. Sending files is better through msn messenger, and even better with mIRC as you can send more than one file at a time and they go straight to a folder on your drive.
PS Yahoo is a better engine than Google, Google is powered by Yahoo anyway. |

I'll use it. Sounds like a great thing. And I'll pay extra to be able to access it through POP3 or IMAP, which they're talking about doing down the road. |

Up until very recently, Yahoo used Google in place of their own search service. Google has never been "powered by Yahoo". |

I'd just use a European chatting program.
If that happened, say goodbye to MSN. Seriously. |

Oh yeah! Google Gmail beta is now open to certain special users like me !
I got my full name, no numbers! My first name alone was too short, unfortunately. 6 character minimum. Oh well. 1 GB of space, that is amazing!
I was so new that even names like steven and jennifer were available...
Yahoo and hotmail must be loving this. Prepare to see changes soon, I bet. No more paid subscriptions for their "bigger" boxes.

I proudly receive very little spam in my email accounts. I am careful about doing business on line, and about what sites I visit and leave a trail of cookies for.
The new Google sounds like it would undo all of that. Maybe it gives you so much space so you can deal with the vast increase in spam, as advertisers micro-target users from having access to you email.
They probably have a "carnivore" type program:
Quote: |
The FBI explains the origin of the codename: "Carnivore chews all the data on the network, but it only actually eats the information authorized by a court order."
Carnivore acts like a "packet sniffer". All Internet traffic is broken down into bundles called "packets". Carnivore eavesdrops on these packets watching them go by, then saves a copy of the packets it is interested in.
It is important to note that Carnivore is a passive wiretap. |
Quote: |
In 1997, the FBI deployed the second generation program, Omnivore. According to information released by the FBI, Omnivore was designed to look through e-mail traffic travelling over a specific Internet service provider (ISP) and capture the e-mail from a targeted source, saving it to a tape-backup drive or printing it in real-time. Omnivore was retired in late 1999 in favor of a more comprehensive system, the DragonWare Suite, which allows the FBI to reconstruct e-mail messages, downloaded files or even Web pages. |
This sort of technology is probably being used by Google to access all of the email both coming and going from your email mail account. So you may not be doing your friends any favor by using this service. |

I doubt I'll use it. Have you read the Terms of Service?
No thanks. I'll gladly pay to *not* have my emails scanned. |

OK, I don't feel so bad then for deleting my new account thinking I could then start over and pick a new name. Once I deleted the account, I could not register again as the original special link I got no longer worked.
I emailed them and hopefully I can get the name I should have picked. (shawn1) which was available, but for some reason I went with my full name, realzing later it's much too long.
Anyway, I'm sure yahoo and hotmail will respond shortly... |

No body reads e-mails. In fact, people don't even read the tons of crap I write and post on DESL. The FBI could be my fan base. |

Do you know why they give you 1gig of space? Because you can never delete any emails. |

Somehow I doubt that. |
